Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: - Hate speech against Hindus. Within it, the sub-category selected is: - Anti-Hindu slurs and mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This case has been added to the tracker because a Muslim man, Rahis Ahmad, lured and sexually molested a minor Dalit Hindu girl. When the victim’s family confronted him, he not only threatened them but also hurled casteist abuses at them and chased them away. In this case, there is a credible and consistent pattern suggesting that the victim may have been deliberately targeted due to her religious identity. Similar incidents have frequently involved Hindu girls being lured and exploited by individuals from the Muslim community, indicating a broader trend of profiling. This targeting is often underpinned by an ideological mindset, where certain extremist interpretations dehumanise non-Muslim women, especially Hindus, making them more vulnerable to such exploitation. That said, the incident could also be viewed as a crime of opportunity, wherein the Dalit girl was seen as an easily accessible target. What clearly shifts this incident from opportunism to religiously motivated hostility is the use of caste-based slurs directed at the victim’s family when they confronted the accused, signalling not only prejudice but also a deliberate attempt to assert religious and social dominance. While it may be argued that caste-specific slurs target the micro-identity of Dalits within the broader Hindu community, such distinctions are largely irrelevant from the perspective of Abrahamic religious ideologies. For individuals influenced by such worldviews, it is the broader religious identity, Hinduism, that forms the primary basis of animosity. In this case, although Rahis Ahmad used caste-based slurs, these were directed at a Hindu family and reflect a deeper religious hostility. The targeting of a Hindu girl, coupled with the use of casteist abuse, underscores that the crime was not merely social or opportunistic but rooted in religiously motivated hatred. Therefore, the incident qualifies as a hate crime against Hindus.
