Hindu woman lured and sexually exploited under false pretext of marriage, thereafter pressured to convert to Islam

Case Summary
In Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, a Hindu woman was sexually exploited for over 10 years on the false pretext of marriage by a Muslim man, Amir Siddiqui. She was also pressured to convert to Islam. Amir Siddiqui, a youth Congress state secretary and resident of Contractor Colony, has been arrested on charges of sexual exploitation of a Hindu woman for over 10 years under the false pretext of marriage. He was also pressuring her to convert to Islam if she wanted to marry him. The victim is an assistant professor at a private college and has known Siddiqui since their college days. Their relationship developed into a close friendship, after which Siddiqui lured the victim with false promises of marriage and maintained a physical relationship with her over a period of ten years, from 2015 to 2025. When the victim pressured Amir, he married her in the Gayatri Mandir just to satisfy her. In February 2022, when the victim became pregnant, Siddiqui manipulated her to do an abortion by again falsely promising marriage. The situation escalated when the victim discovered that Siddiqui was planning to marry another woman. Upon confronting him, a dispute arose during which the victim again pressed for marriage. Siddiqui flatly refused, leading the victim to file a police complaint. As of the date of writing this report, the accused was arrested by the police, and the investigation was ongoing.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within it, the sub-category selected is- Forced conversion after marriage. In such cases, a non-Hindu man marries a Hindu woman, and the force/pressure to convert to Islam begins after marriage. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship. The marriage could be under the Special Marriages Act, where neither parties are required to convert their religion for the marriage to be considered legitimate. While the victim in such cases enters matrimony assuming that religious identity is not a barrier, the non-Hindu man starts to pressure the woman to convert to Islam after marriage. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both situations, there is application of force by the perpetrator, including the denial of the woman’s religious rights. Some of the means by which the woman is forced/pressured to convert include force-feeding beef, being forced to read the Kalma, being forced to wear a hijab, forced to undergo Halala, etc. There are several instances where, after marriage, the woman voluntarily converts to Islam. Such cases are often argued to be a result of religious brainwashing, however, for the purpose of documenting religiously motivated hate crimes, in the absence of the victim complaining of forced conversion, such cases do not form a part of the database. The other sub-category selected here is: - Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity of being a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence, etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Here, the Muslim accused did not conceal his religious identity. Instead, he presented a facade of acceptance, leading the Hindu woman to believe that her faith would not be a barrier to their relationship. Based on this understanding, she entered into a romantic and physical relationship with him, trusting his repeated assurances of marriage. Over the course of a decade, he exploited this trust, maintaining a relationship under false promises while gradually revealing his actual intent. To pacify her demands for a formal commitment, Siddiqui even went so far as to marry her in a Hindu temple (Gayatri Mandir), despite never intending to honour the marriage genuinely. This act was a deliberate manipulation aimed at maintaining control over her while continuing the deception. When the woman began insisting on marriage, the accused not only refused but also made it clear that conversion to Islam was a non-negotiable precondition for any formal union. This shift in stance—demanding religious conversion after years of manipulation—exposed his underlying motive. The pressure to abandon her Hindu faith in exchange for marriage highlights the communal nature of the crime. It wasn't just emotional or physical exploitation; it involved a coercive attempt to erase the victim’s religious identity as a Hindu woman. Such a pattern of building a relationship with a Hindu woman under the pretence of religious acceptance and then weaponising that trust to push for conversion amounts to a religiously motivated violation. This isn’t just a personal betrayal; it is a form of religious coercion rooted in the belief that a Hindu woman’s identity must be altered or suppressed to make her "acceptable." This qualifies as a hate crime and warrants inclusion in the Hinduphobia Tracker.
