Tribal Hindu youth held hostage and beaten by Muslim men in Madhya Pradesh
Case Summary
In Hansalpur village, located in the Guna district of Madhya Pradesh, a 24-year-old Hindu tribal man was held captive for 14 years by two Muslim men. The young man was chained, beaten and held hostage by the accused. According to news reports, the accused were identified as Ibrahim and Rahim. The victim was kept in chains and forced to perform all household chores, including cleaning the toilet. The accused neither paid the victim a fair wage nor provided him with good food. The victim in this case was not allowed to meet his parents and was beaten by Ibrahim and Rahim over minor issues. The victim’s father sought help from Mahendra Yadav, the president of the Bajrang Sena, to rescue his son. Subsequently, Yadav, along with activists from the Keshariya Hindu Vahini, rescued the victim from the house of Ibrahim and Rahim. After the rescue, the victim and his family were taken to the police station, where a complaint was filed against Ibrahim and Rahim. ACP Sonu Dawar confirmed that the youth was rescued and that his family had lodged a complaint with the police. The police have since launched an investigation to determine why the accused kept the victim hostage for such a long period and why the family did not object earlier.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, there is a strong underlying suspicion that the victim might have been religiously profiled and targeted because of his religious identity. As observed in many instances, Hindus are specifically targeted by Muslim men due to deep-seated religious animosity towards Hindus and their faith. Nevertheless, since there is no clear indication or evidence that the victim was religiously profiled or targeted, this case does not meet the criteria to be classified as a hate crime. Additionally, neither the victim nor his family have indicated any religious motivations behind the crime. Therefore, this case has been added to the ‘Undecided’ database. If further information comes to light indicating that the crime was committed due to religious motivations, it will be reclassified under the hate crime database. Disclaimer: Media reports state that the victim was held hostage for 14 years, though no exact date or month is provided. To document this case, we have used an indicative date—January 1, 2011—as a placeholder to represent the beginning of her suffering. While media coverage of the incident emerged on May 4, 2025, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported.
