Muslim gang arrested in Meerut after repeated cow slaughter offences

Case Summary
A case under the Gangster Act has been registered against seven Muslims men for being involved in repeated incidents of illegal cow slaughter in Meerut’s Nauchandi area. The accused, identified as Sajid, Shabaz Qureshi, Salim Atta, Sharif alias Sukke, Najju, Riyazuddin, and Mohsin were slaughtered cows at Nauchandi Ground and disposed of the remains in the drain near the BSP office in Phoolbagh Colony. Following protests by various Hindu organisations, the police registered a case of cow slaughter and arrested all the accused who were later released on bail. After being released on bail, it turned out all the accused again started doing cow slaughter. Therfore on May 14, 2025, the police imposed the Gangster Act on these seven individuals. Five of the accused, Sajid, Shabaz Qureshi, Sharif alias Sukke, Najju, and Riyazuddin have been arrested again and sent to jail. Salim Atta and Mohsin remain at large, and police were conducting raids to apprehend them.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, it would be added to the Hate Crime Database.
