Minor Hindu girl murdered by Muslim man and accomplice over one-sided obsession in Odisha

Case Summary
In Karapalli, Odisha, a 16-year-old Hindu girl was murdered by a 20-year-old Muslim man named Muna Khan and his accomplice, over a one-sided obsession with the victim. According to a report by The New Indian Express, the girl was a second-year student at Berhampur ITI. The accused had been regularly stalking her and even detaining her on the road. The girl’s family had complained to the police regarding this harassment, but no action was taken against Khan. Khan was the victim’s former boyfriend. They had been in a relationship for several years before breaking up. On the day of the incident, Khan and his 16-year-old accomplice entered the girl’s home through the back entrance and found her alone. Khan produced a razor blade from his pocket and threatened to slit his own wrist if she did not accept his proposal. During the argument, Khan made superficial cuts to his wrist, which caused the girl to panic. She took the blade from him and attempted to call her father. As Khan tried to snatch her phone, a struggle ensued. At this point, the juvenile accomplice entered the house and struck the girl on the head with a crowbar, causing her to collapse. Khan then slashed her wrists before both accused fled the scene, leaving the girl to bleed to death. The police arrived at the scene and recovered the girl’s body, which was sent for post-mortem examination. The girl’s uncle, Prafulla Sahu, filed a police complaint. Both accused, Muna Khan, aged 20, and his 16-year-old accomplice from Kaipadar in Khurda-were arrested. The police seized a crowbar, a blade, a moped, and two mobile phones from their possession. The duo were produced before a court, and further investigation would be carried out.

In this case, there is a strong suspicion that the Muslim man was targeting the Hindu girl for her religious identity. Additionally, the girl was a minor and a minor lacks the maturity and informed consent to make decisions regarding being in romantic or sexual relationships with an adult. Hindu girls and women are the most vulnerable and are often victims of predatory Muslim men who exploit them. Muslim perpetrators target Hindu women and girls due to inherent animosity towards Hindus, particularly Hindu women. It is often seen in such cases that the one-sided persuasion by the Muslim perpetrator stems from the demands to convert the Hindu woman and the doctrinal dehumanisation of Hindu women in Islam. In many cases when a Hindu woman rejects the Muslim man's demands, then they are murdered or raped due to religious animosity towards the victim's Hindu identity. However, from the available information, we cannot conclusively state that a religious motive was involved in the crime. Neither has the family of the victim made any statement hinting towards a religious motive behind the crime.
