Hindus mocked; sacred cow insulted in derogatory video by Muslim man in Saharanpur
Case Summary
In the Saharanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, a Muslim man posted a video on social media in which he was standing beside an injured cow. Blood was visibly flowing from the cow’s leg. The Muslim man filming the video sarcastically referred to the blood as fresh sugarcane juice and urging people to drink it. He also mocked Hindus. The video went viral, and a formal complaint was filed against him, and he was arrested. The viral video was from the Nakur police station area of the Saharanpur district. The location was identified as Ambehta Peer. The name of the perpetrator is Abdul Malik. He is one of the sons of Haji Khalid and lives in the Muslim-majority locality called “Mohalla Qila”. In the video, he is seen standing in a deserted area next to a tied-up cow. The cow appears to be injured, with a visible cut on its leg, likely inflicted by a sharp weapon. Blood is seen oozing from the wound. It is notable that Abdul Malik is known to be a follower of Owaisi, and he has prominently displayed a photo of Owaisi on his video. In the viral clip, Abdul Malik is heard saying mockingly: “Here you go, blind devotees — fresh sugarcane juice, just for you, Mata ji. You people can’t do anything else. This is all you're capable of. You are blind devotees, children of blind devotees. Drink up, fresh and warm.” At the end of the video, the voice is not clear, but it appears that Abdul Malik was using a common anti-Hindu slur "cow piss drinker". The video ends with background voices chanting “Bismillah-Bismillah.” Some Arabic text scrolls across the top of the video, believed to be lines from religious Islamic texts. The video went viral and stirred an uproar in the Hindu community. Local organisations lodged a complaint with the police. The police arrested the accused, Abdul Malik. It is reported that following the arrest, the police dealt with him firmly, to the extent that he was limping and publicly apologising. The accused was seen pleading, “Please forgive me, I will never say or do anything wrong again in my life.” Nakur Police Station in-charge, Avinash Gautam, confirmed that a case was registered against Abdul Malik under serious sections. The officer stated that the language used in the video was clearly intended to disrupt social harmony. He further emphasised that such behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker un the primary category of - Hate speech against Hindus. The sub-category selected here is - Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. The incident involving Abdul Malik in Saharanpur qualifies as a hate crime because it clearly reflects religious animosity directed specifically at the Hindu community. In the viral video, Malik mocks Hindu beliefs by referring to the blood of an injured cow—a sacred animal in Hinduism—as "fresh sugarcane juice" meant for "blind devotees". Here, "blind devotees' clearly means Hindus. In Hinduism, the cow is not merely an animal, but a deeply revered sacred being. She is referred to as mother or Gaumata. She is linked to deities like Krishna. Harming a cow or mocking its sanctity is not just offensive to Hindus but is a direct attack on their faith and identity. The comments in this case were not just insensitive, but they were a targeted and performative insult designed to ridicule Hindu sentiments and provoke outrage. By turning a sacred cow into a subject of sarcasm and contempt, the comments made by Abdul cross the line from free expression into hate speech. His words were not just casual insults but indicated a deeper hostility, fueled by a desire to demean and belittle Hindu beliefs and customs. As such, this incident is being categorised as a religiously motivated hate crime against Hindus.
