Case Summary

In Bhagalpur, Bihar, a Hindu woman was exploited by Imran Alam for over nine years under the pretext of marriage. He promised to support her and her daughter, and once he gained her trust, he started pressuring her to convert to Islam. He forced fed her beef and threatened her for refusing nikah. After repeated police inaction, she approached the court, which intervened in the matter. The woman shared that her first marriage took place in 2010. She lived with her husband for two years before he entered into a love marriage with another woman in 2013. Following this, she moved back to her parental home with her daughter. To support herself and her child, she took up work as a cleaner at the ITI in Bhagalpur. It was there that she came into contact with Imran Alam in 2016. Over time, a relationship developed between them, and Imran began visiting her home frequently. The woman stated that Imran had promised to marry her. She further explained that Imran had assured her he would accept her daughter and take responsibility for both of them after marriage. With her child’s future in mind, she began to consider him her husband. Over the past nine years, Imran established physical relations with her multiple times. She became pregnant on several occasions, but each time, Imran forced multiple abortions. When she began to press for marriage, Imran demanded that she convert to Islam. He also pressured her to eat beef. She also stated that Imran had married another woman during this period. When she resisted, he threatened to kill her. He also threatened to kill her parents and sell her daughter. On 28th January 2025, she approached the court and submitted her complaint against Imran. Following a notice issued by the court, the police summoned the woman to the station. However, instead of going to the police station, she appeared in court and expressed her frustration with the police, saying she was exhausted from making repeated visits without receiving any assistance. She maintained that the police had consistently ignored her complaints. At the time of writing this report, the matter was under police investigation.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker un the primary category of - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The sub-category selected here is - Forced conversion before marriage, and within it, the tertiary categories selected are - Forced to do Nikah and Forced to eat beef. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The other sub-category selected is - Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity of being a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The other sub-category selected is - Assault or threat upon refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces threats or assault after she refuses to convert and change her religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert to Islam and upon her refusal, assaults or threatens the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. The other sub-category selected is - Torture of family to force woman to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is forced to convert her religion. Several methods are used for such forced conversion. The non-Hindu man is often documented to issue threats and even employ violence. One of the ways used by such perpetrators is threatening and/or torturing the family members of the Hindu woman to pressure her to convert. The perpetrators in such cases issue threats to harm or torture the family of the woman. In some cases, there is also violence directed towards the family to force the Hindu woman to convert. Such crimes aim to blackmail the victim into changing her religion by inducing fear of harm to her family. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. This case from Bhagalpur, Bihar, is a clear instance of a religiously motivated hate crime targeting a Hindu woman because of her religious identity. Imran Alam, a Muslim man, engaged in a prolonged relationship with the Hindu victim under the pretext of marriage, during which he systematically coerced her to convert to Islam. He not only exploited her emotionally and physically but also pressured her to perform actions deeply offensive to her religious beliefs, such as consuming beef and agreeing to a religious conversion through Nikah. These acts were not incidental but deliberately aimed at forcing a change in her faith. Forcing a Hindu to eat beef is an act of deep violation, not just of personal choice but of religious sanctity, as the cow is revered in Hinduism as a sacred and maternal symbol (Gau Mata). This act is not merely a dietary imposition—it is a targeted attack on the core of the victim’s belief system, intended to degrade and desecrate what is held holy. Such coercion is a form of psychological and spiritual violence, intended to humiliate and strip the person of religious dignity and identity. The woman was threatened with death, and further threatened that her daughter would be sold and her parents killed. These threats were religiously charged and targeted her specifically because she was Hindu. The use of force, manipulation, and intimidation to obliterate the woman’s religious identity, paired with specific actions such as pressuring her to eat beef, shows that the abuse was not merely personal or domestic but religiously motivated. The intent to convert her forcibly and the subsequent punishment for resisting highlight a deep-seated contempt for her Hindu faith, making this a clear case of religious hatred and bigotry. Disclaimer: Media reports state that the victim's ordeal began when she met the accused in 2016, though no exact date or month is provided.
