Muslim man arrested for sexually assaulting calf in Uttarakhand

Case Summary
In Chilkiya village, Ramnagar, Uttarakhand, a calf owned by a Hindu family was raped by a Muslim man named Waseem. According to news reports, the calf was owned by a Hindu woman named Meena Devi and her husband, who were residents of Chilkiya village. She owned and cared for animals in her garden. The accused, Waseem, a Muslim man, is a resident of Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, who had come to work in the neighbouring garden. On the day of the incident, she reached her garden to see her animals; thereafter, she discovered that her cow's calf was missing from there. After which she started searching for the calf with her husband. During the search, they reached an old, ruined room in the garden and witnessed the accused, Waseem raping the calf in the room. According to Meena Devi, when she and her husband confronted Waseem, he abused them and ran away from the spot. She then filed a complaint against Waseem at the local police station. The local police registered a case against Waseem for animal cruelty and arrested him. The accused was produced before the court; thereafter, the court sent him to jail.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. The Vedas and all Hindu scriptures hold the same view that the Cow is holy. An incident involving a Muslim man sexually assaulting a calf is deeply reprehensible and disturbing. Also, there is a precedent of cows, sacred in Hinduism, being mocked or slaughtered as acts of hostility towards Hindus. As observed by a Gujarat court, several cases of cow slaughter (therefore, defilement of cows as well) were driven by the specific intent to hurt Hindu religious sentiments. However, in this specific case, there is no direct evidence to prove that the act of bestiality was driven by religious animosity. Therefore, it has been included in the undecided database.
