Case Summary
In Pavli Khas village of Meerut district, a Muslim man named Moshin was arrested for cow slaughter and cow smuggling after it was found that he was selling cow meat under the guise of buffalo meat. The incident began when the Kankarkheda police received a tip-off that a cow was being slaughtered at a local meat shop of a Muslim man named Moshin, son of Shahabuddin. Acting on this information, the police team immediately reached the location, prompting Moshin and his three accomplices to flee towards a nearby forest. The police launched a search operation in the forest. On seeing the police approach, the smugglers hiding in the forest opened fire. In retaliation, the police also fired back, during which a bullet hit Moshin in the leg, causing him to fall down. Subsequently, Moshin was arrested. Taking advantage of the situation, his three accomplices managed to escape. Cow remains were recovered from the shop and taken into police custody. According to the residents, Moshin had been running the meat shop for a long time and was known to have been illegally selling cow meat disguised as buffalo meat. As of the date of writing this report, the police confirmed that Moshin has a prior history of involvement in cow smuggling, and stringent legal action was being taken against him. Meanwhile, efforts were underway to apprehend his absconding associates.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, it will be added to the Hate Crime Database.
