Case Summary

In Etah, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu girl was deceived by a Muslim man named Noman Ansari, who pretended to be a Hindu. Identifying himself as "Ansh Rajput," Ansari developed a relationship with the woman, who worked in Delhi, and maintained the false identity for approximately three months before he was caught. After some time, the girl returned to her native village in Uttar Pradesh with Noman Ansari, and the two lived together for a few months. During this period, he convinced her of his false identity and intentions, ultimately leading to an engagement on 29 April. Following the engagement, Ansari attempted to purchase jewellery using a fraudulent cheque, which led to suspicion when the cheque bounced. It was then revealed, by the police, that his true identity was Noman Ansari, son of Qasim Ali Ansari, a resident of Kushinagar, and that he had been deliberately hiding his Muslim background. Further examination revealed that he was in possession of a forged Aadhaar card, which not only bore the false name "Ansh Rajput" but also misrepresented his age. As of the date of writing this report, the accused was arrested by the police, and the investigation was ongoing.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within it, the sub-category selected is: - Man pretends to be Hindu, with the tertiary category being: - Name changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. This case qualifies as a hate crime because it involved the deliberate targeting of a Hindu woman through religious deception by a Muslim man, making her faith the basis for the exploitation. By assuming a false Hindu identity and becoming engaged under that name, the accused carried out a calculated act of deceit aimed at emotionally manipulating the victim and breaching her trust. This reflects a broader pattern in which Hindu women are specifically targeted through false identities, underscoring deeper issues of religiously motivated hostility. The act of impersonating a Hindu to gain access to a woman’s personal space is not just a personal betrayal—it reveals a disregard for the victim’s religious identity and a willingness to exploit it for malafide purposes. Such actions go beyond individual misconduct and point to a communal bias, where religious identity is used as a tool for deception. As the deception was intentional and rooted in targeting someone based on her faith, this case meets the criteria for being classified as a religiously motivated hate crime.
