Hindu woman misled by Muslim man who concealed his identity to entrap her in a relationship

Case Summary
In Indore, a Muslim man, Kushal Khan, befriended a Hindu girl by introducing himself as a Hindu named Kushal Prajapat. The incident took place in Apollo Tower in Indore. The accused, who worked at a shop, had misbehaved with the victim girl in the parking area. Upon learning of the incident, Man Singh Rajawat and other members of a Hindu organisation reached the spot and took the youth to the police station. When Rajawat questioned him, the youth gave his name as Kushal Prajapat. However, when he was firmly asked to show his identity card, he revealed his real name to be Kushal Khan, a resident of Khajrana. During interrogation, the youth stated that the girl had worked at a shop in the same tower and that he had been in contact with her for the past three to four months. The girl confirmed that Kushal had introduced himself using a false name and befriended her. Several photos and videos of other girls were also found on the youth’s mobile phone.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case is categorised under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Under that, the relevant sub-category is- Man pretends to be Hindu, and within it, the tertiary category selected is- Name Changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. This case is considered a hate crime because the perpetrator deliberately hid his religious identity to deceive a Hindu woman, making her faith the reason she was targeted. By misrepresenting himself and then engaging in misconduct, he used her religious background as a tool for manipulation and harm. This pattern highlights how Hindu women can be singled out and exploited based on their faith, revealing a deeper issue of religious discrimination and targeted hostility. The perpetrator’s actions were motivated by prejudice against the woman’s religious identity. By intentionally deceiving her and exploiting her faith as a means to manipulate her, he demonstrated clear hostility rooted in religious bias. Such behaviour goes beyond personal misconduct and reflects a deliberate attempt to target someone because of their beliefs, which is the very definition of a hate crime.
