Minor Hindu girl brainwashed and manipulated under false promise of marriage by a Muslim youth

Case Summary
In the Pallavpuram area of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, a 17-year-old Hindu girl was targeted by a Muslim tempo driver from Pawli Khas village. According to the complaint filed by the vctim's mother, the Muslim tempo driver brainwashed and manipulated her, gradually building trust with the minor under the guise of marriage and luring her away. The girl, who assists her father in selling flowers outside a temple, came into contact with the accused, who then built trust with the teenager and later coerced her into an emotional trap under the pretext of marriage. The accused then manipulated her into leaving her home, stealing cash and jewellery. While trying to flee, her family members, however, intercepted her on a nearby street. The situation escalated when the Muslim youth called the girl’s phone and issued death threats to her family, vowing to kidnap her at any cost. The incident sparked outrage in the local community and among Hindu organisations, as the case involves a Hindu minor. Leaders from the BJP Mahila Morcha and VHP visited the victim's home, extended their support, and accompanied the family to the police station to file a formal complaint, urging authorities to act swiftly. Police registered the case and launched an investigation. As of the date of writing this report, the accused was absconding.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
While it is important to acknowledge that the victim in this case is a minor, making any supposed "consent" legally invalid under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the criteria for inclusion in the hate crime database require a distinct religious motive behind the grooming. In cases where an adult from another religion coerces, manipulates, or deceives a minor into a relationship with the intent of religious conversion, it would be classified as a hate crime. However, in this instance, there is no concrete evidence suggesting that the Muslim youth targeted the Hindu minor girl specifically for religious reasons or attempted to convert her. The fact that the girl was lured into fleeing with cash and jewellery may indicate a motive driven by financial exploitation rather than a targeted attack on her religious identity. Without this crucial element, the case, though legally significant and punishable under POCSO, does not meet the specific threshold for categorisation as a religiously motivated hate crime. Upon the emergence of further relevant details, the case will be shifted from the Undecided category to our Hate Crime database.
