Case Summary

A teenage Hindu girl who went missing from Narela in Delhi was located in Kidwai Nagar, Kanpur. The family filed a complaint against a Muslim man for luring and kidnapping their daughter. The Delhi police, accompanied by the girl's mother and local Hindu Corporator Hari Swaroop Tiwari, traced her location to a house near Loha Park. With the support of the local police, the girl and a young man were found at the residence. During the operation, the corporator was confronted by Muslim residents of the house, specifically Musharaf Ali and his son Asad Ali, who grabbed his collar and issued threats of dire consequences. Tiwari also said that there were several people illegally residing in the house where the girl was found, and he was also physically assaulted. Following the incident, the corporator and his supporters went to the Kidwai Nagar police station to raise their concerns. In his complaint, he accused the Muslim family of involvement in the kidnapping of the hindu girl and called it “love jihad,” prompting police to register a case and begin an investigation into the matter. As of the writing of this report, authorities were investigating the incident and the claims made by all parties involved.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under two primary categories, the first being: Predatory proselytisation. Within this, the sub-category selected is- Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination and the tertiary category being: Family claims grooming. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting, regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytisation, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. The second category, which applies here, is: Attack not resulting in death, and the sub-category selected within this is: Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save a victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. This case warrants inclusion in the Hinduphobia tracker as it demonstrates clear signs of a religiously motivated crime specifically targeting Hindus. The sequence of events began with the disappearance of a teenage Hindu girl from Narela, later found in the home of a Muslim family in Kanpur. The family of the girl alleged that she had been lured and manipulated into leaving with the accused, suggesting a pattern of psychological grooming intended to detach her from her community and religious identity. Such manipulation, particularly when it involves minors and the context of religious disparity, reflects a predatory intent with underlying religious motives, especially when concerns of conversion or ideological influence are suspected by the victim’s family. It is important to note here that the details of this case reveal that the Hindu girl was a minor, indicating a lack of consent and a genuine change of conscience. It is a well-established fact that children are more susceptible to manipulation since they are still developing emotionally, cognitively, and socially. Their brains are not fully mature, making them more vulnerable to influence and less capable of critically evaluating information. Moreover, subtle manipulation tactics can be difficult to detect, especially when employed by trusted authority figures in positions of influence. This makes it challenging for parents to identify and address instances of religious manipulation. Consequently, cases involving religious manipulation of minors not only represent an infringement on an individual's religious freedom but also demonstrate a calculated strategy of targeting those who are less able to resist or understand the long-term implications of conversion, making it a significant case of religiously motivated hate crime. Further, the situation escalated when a local Hindu corporator, who accompanied the authorities to help rescue the girl, was physically assaulted and threatened by members of the Muslim household. This act of violence, aimed at an individual seeking to safeguard the girl and assist her family, reveals the hostile reaction meted out to those who challenge such acts. It underscores the dangerous resistance faced by those who attempt to intervene, particularly when they belong to or represent the Hindu community. Two evident religious markers establish the communal and anti-Hindu nature of this incident. Firstly, the targeting of a Hindu minor by individuals from a different religious background, under accusations of grooming and abduction, highlights the exploitation of religious differences to exert control and influence. Secondly, the attack on a Hindu representative attempting to retrieve the girl further reinforces the hostility towards Hindus who resist such actions. The confluence of elements like religious targeting, manipulation, and physical aggression clearly frames this as a hate-driven incident deserving of documentation within the broader context of Hinduphobic violence and intimidation.
