Hindu girl lured and converted to Islam by Muslim youth

Case Summary
In Ghatkopar, Mumbai, a Hindu girl named Mousumi Hazarika was forcefully converted to Islam by a Muslim man named Nadeem, a resident of Mawai village in Hussain Ganj, Uttar Pradesh. According to reports, Nadeem lured the girl and, with the assistance of several others, including Kazi Mohammad Islam, created fabricated marriage documents and coerced Mousumi Hazarika into an Islamic Nikah under duress. They forcefully converted her to Islam, changed her name to Anaya Fatima and married her. Nadeem then took her away to an unknown location. Nadeem Ahmad reportedly told local residents, using the fabricated marriage documents, that he had lawfully married Mousumi Hazarika and claimed she had converted to Islam before the Nikah. On receiving information about the incident, several Bajrang Dal activists reached the Hussain Ganj police station and submitted a written complaint demanding strict action against the accused and his accomplices. The police detained the girl and the youth and registered an FIR.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Under this, the first sub-category selected is- Forced to do Nikah. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. The relationship in such cases is mostly consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. In such cases, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. Here, the victim, Mousumi Hazarika, was lured and manipulated by the accused, Nadeem, who not only deceived her but, with the assistance of others, forcibly converted her to Islam, changed her name, and compelled her into a Nikah—a religious marriage under Islamic law. The use of coercion and religious manipulation to strip the victim of her identity and autonomy constitutes a grave violation of her rights. Such acts are emblematic of a pattern where vulnerable women are exploited, stripped of their faith and cultural identity, and married off under duress. Going by the testimony of Bajrang Dal activists, the conversion and marriage were neither voluntary nor transparent. Moreover, she was then moved to an unknown location, which further underscores the seriousness of the crime. It is not just a matter of unlawful conversion but also one of forced imposition of religious identity and forced Nikah, carried out without informed consent. This case has been documented in the hate tracker as every detail points towards the fact that the perpetrator wanted to target the victim because of her religious identity, specifically and that his motivation was driven by religious hate.
