Hindu workers attacked in Dubai over minor dispute; Muslim assailant shout religious slogans during assault
Case Summary
In a bakery in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, a Pakistani national attacked three Indian Hindu workers while shouting religious slogans. Two of the victims, Ashtapu Premsagar from Nirmal district and Srinivas from Nizamabad district in Telangana, were fatally stabbed and both died. A third Indian worker, Sagar, sustained serious injuries and was undergoing treatment at the time. The attack was triggered by a minor dispute, which escalated into a religiously motivated assault. The attacker was a colleague of the victims and used a bladed weapon to repeatedly stab Premsagar and Srinivas. It was reported that before being killed, Premsagar pleaded for his life and mentioned his family, including his wife and two young daughters, but his appeals were ignored. He had been working in Dubai for five years and was planning to return home soon. The families of the deceased stated that they had not received any official communication from the Dubai police or government agencies and were relying on relatives for updates. Efforts were ongoing to repatriate the bodies to India. Indian ministers Bandi Sanjay Kumar and G Kishan Reddy expressed their condolences and assured full support from the Ministry of External Affairs. Reddy confirmed that he had spoken to External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, who promised swift action and assistance for the grieving families, as well as immediate arrangements to bring the bodies back to India.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the prime category- Attack resulting in death. The sub-category relevant in this case is- Attacked for Hindu identity. In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime. Under this category, cases where the attack led to the death of the Hindu victim/s would be documented. This case qualifies as a hate crime because a minor workplace dispute escalated into a violent attack after the perpetrator began shouting religious slogans. Although the initial disagreement was non-religious, the attacker used it as a pretext to target his Hindu colleagues. The shift from a seemingly ordinary dispute to a fatal assault, accompanied by religious chanting, suggests that the real motive was not the conflict itself but deep-seated religious animosity. The use of religious slogans during the attack makes it clear that the violence was ideologically driven and aimed at the victims’ religious identity. While workplace disagreements are common, the specific targeting of Hindu workers, coupled with the religious sloganeering, sets this case apart. The assailant's actions went beyond personal grievance and reflected a broader pattern of religious hostility. By transforming a minor conflict into an act of religious violence, the attacker demonstrated that the victims were assaulted not for their actions but for their religious identity. This aligns with the definition of a hate crime and warrants inclusion in the Hinduphobia tracker.
