Minor Hindu girl lured into a relationship and abducted by a Muslim youth

Case Summary
A case involving the attempted abduction of a minor schoolgirl has surfaced from the Bro area near Rampur in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district. According to police reports, a Class 10 student was allegedly manipulated into a relationship over the past few months by a man employed at a local salon, following which an attempt was made to abduct her. Prompt intervention by the police led to the safe recovery of the girl. Two men, identified as Mubarik and Shoaib, have been detained in connection with the incident. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The girl, a resident of the Bro panchayat, was reportedly confined to a rented room in the area. Police suspect that another woman, in whose accommodation the girl was hidden, may have been aware of the situation. Authorities are investigating her possible role. The accused allegedly broke into the room to conceal the minor, raising questions about how such access was gained. Family members say the girl had been in communication with one of the accused over the phone. Upon discovering this, the girl’s mother had brought her back to their native village to cut off contact. However, on the night of April 7, the girl went missing. After searching through the night without success, her family filed a missing person report on April 8. Police tracked the girl to a locked room in the same locality and recovered her safely. The accused were taken into custody for questioning and subsequently booked under kidnapping and POCSO provisions. DSP Anni Chandrashekhar Kayath confirmed the registration of the case and stated that the police are conducting a thorough investigation. The girl was provided with medical attention and underwent counselling through the Child Welfare Committee.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Since the victim in this case is a minor, there is a strong suspicion of grooming involved. Grooming is a phenomenon where Muslim men specifically target minor non-Muslim girls for sexual exploitation, abuse and rape. However, since there is no specific evidence of a pattern of victimization of Hindu minors by the perpetrator and no indication from the parents of the minor that she was targeted for her religious identity, this case is being categorized as 'undecided'. If more information emerges, it will be added to the hate crime database.
