Case Summary

An incident involving cow slaughter was reported in Malhipur village, located within the jurisdiction of the Chhapia police station in Gonda district. Upon receiving information regarding the incident, members of local Hindu organisations visited the site and reported the presence of animal remains, blood and other materials indicative of slaughter. The name of a local resident, identified as Nasir, was linked to the activity; however, he reportedly fled the location before the police arrived. Following the alert, the Chhapia police reached the site and recovered a quantity of meat suspected to be beef, along with equipment used in the act. According to statements from members of Hindu organisations, similar incidents had been occurring in the area over a period of time, with claims that administrative action had been inadequate. In response to the situation, local administrative officials—including the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), the Circle Officer, and the Station Officer—arrived at the scene along with additional police personnel. To manage the situation, supplementary forces from the Khondare police station were also deployed. The MLA issued a public statement affirming that cow slaughter would not be permitted. Villagers stated that the criminal activity occurred with the knowledge or tacit approval of the local police outpost. Representatives of Hindu groups called for legal action against the accused, including the demolition of properties alleged to be unlawfully constructed. A sit-in protest was held in the village to demand immediate intervention. Circle Officer Singh stated that preliminary findings supported the allegations made against Nasir and confirmed that efforts were underway to apprehend him. Following the developments, law enforcement agencies continued to monitor the area and maintain security to prevent escalation.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, it will be added to the Hate Crime Database.
