Hindu youth dies by suicide after being forced to convert to Islam in Auraiya district, Uttar Pradesh

Case Summary
In Auraiya district, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu man named Rohit Kumar, in his twenties, committed suicide after facing pressure to convert to Islam for marriage. Rohit had been previously accused of eloping with the daughter of the accused family and was later released on bail. However, he faced physical assault and continuous coercion to convert to Islam. Unable to endure the pressure, Rohit took his own life. Rohit's mother, Sarojni Devi, filed an FIR at Bidhoona police station on November 20. She stated that Rohit had a friendship with Salman Khan from Indpamau village, where he met Salman's sister, Muskan. The Khan family demanded Rohit convert to Islam to marry Muskan. When Rohit refused, they falsely accused him at Sahar police station.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When there is pressure, threat or coercion employed upon the Hindu victim to convert to a different religion, in several cases, owing to the humiliation or pressure/threat, the victim commits suicide. In such cases, the pressure/threat/intimidation/coercion/violence itself is driven by animosity towards the victim’s Hindu faith. The pressure/threat that is employed leads to the Hindu victim taking his own life. Since the victim’s faith is at the heart of the pressure to convert and the ensuing suicide by the victim, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This case is a distinct case of religiously motivated hate crime as the Hindu victim was being forced to give up his professed faith and accept Islam. In order to intimidate the victim, the accused went to the extent of trapping the victim in a false abduction case. As seen in many such cases, the accused employed this arm-twisting tactic, solely to alienate the Hindu victim from his declared faith. The victim, on the other hand, was not willing to give in to the pressure. This compelled him to end his own life. As the victim's religious identity and the desire to strip him of his religious rights are evident motivators for such crimes, this case has been classified under the core category of Predatory Prostylisation.
