Hindu man Borun Ghosh hacked to death in Bangladesh's post-poll violence
Case Summary
In Bangladesh, Borun Ghosh, a 42-year-old Hindu man, was brutally murdered in what appears to be a case of post-election violence targeting minorities. The incident took place in the Ghoshpara area of Jhenaidah district, following the re-election of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for a fifth term. Ghosh, an activist supporting the ruling Awami League candidate Tahzeeb Alam Siddique Sami who lost the election, was ambushed at his home and fatally attacked with sharp weapons. While the motive remains unclear, the targeted nature of the killing suggests it may have been a hate crime against Hindus. Local police initiated an investigation into the incident, and political leaders condemned the murder, demanding swift action from authorities.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, there is a strong suspicion that the Hindu man was murdered for his Hindu identity. It is pertinent to note that the police, as per the last update, had said that they are unaware of the motive of the crime. However, there were also statements that he could have been murdered because he voted for the Awami League. Given the events that transpired after the 5th of August 2024 and the ethnic cleansing of Hindus, there are suspicions that the murder of Borun Ghosh was also a targeted attack because of his Hindu identity. However, since this murder was before the 5th August coup and there is no statement by his family or the media, alluding to a religious motive, we are documenting this case as 'undecided'. If more information emerges, we would add this case to the hate crime database.
