Married Muslim man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive Hindu girl
Case Summary
In Bharuch of Gujarat, a married Muslim youth named Adil Patel from the Chavaj village posed as Arya Patel on social media to lure a Hindu girl into a love trap for four years. Despite being married, Adil Patel told the girl that he was unmarried. He went as far as preparing for marriage with her. He visited her family to discuss marriage, falsely claiming that his parents had passed away to gain sympathy. However, when the girl discovered his true identity, Adil recorded a video apology and sent it to her. The victim girl reached the house of the accused and slapped him, a video of which went viral. The investigation was handed over to a team of women police and the Bharuch SP was also informed about the incident. The police arrested and locked Adil in jail. They started legal action as per the norms.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, a non-Hindu man concealed his religious identity and pretended to be a Hindu to lure a Hindu woman. Since the religious motive of the crime is evident from the fact that the man pretended to be a Hindu to trap a Hindu woman, this case has been documented as a hate crime.
