Hindu man commits suicide after being harassed by Muslim wife for conversion to Islam

Case Summary
On January 1, 2024, a 25-year-old man identified as Shubham Valmiki committed suicide in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh after being harassed by his wife for refusing to convert to Islam. The accused woman also charged the victim in a fake rape case and forced him into jail after he refused to accept Islam. The victim who was lodged in jail was recently released, after which he hung himself. The victim recorded a video before the suicide saying, “You (the wife) ruined my life. You just wanted me to convert my religion to Islam. I never asked you to become a Hindu. I accepted you the way you are. You even filed a fake rape case against me. Now I have left with no option but to end my life.” Shubham, who worked as a DJ operator, fell in love with a Muslim woman, leading to their marriage through a court procedure three years prior. However, tensions arose between them over the course of a year, with his wife eventually leaving him. She demanded that Shubham convert to Islam, and when he refused, her family asked for a large sum of money from him. The police began an investigation after the video went viral over social media.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the Hindu man married the Muslim woman assuming that their religious identities would not be a hindrance in their married life, however, the Muslim woman started applying pressure on the victim to convert to Islam. She inflicted unexplainable torture on the victim for not acceding to her conversion demands and being unable to withstand the pressure the Hindu man committed suicide. For the record, when Hindu men are in a relationship with non-Hindu women, there are cases where the Hindu man faces pressure/threats/violence to convert and change his religious identity by the non-Hindu spouse or her family or/and religious leaders. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu spouse known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu spouse starts forcing/pressurizing the Hindu man to convert. In some of these cases, unable to bear the pressure/threat/violence being mounted by the non-Hindu partner or her family to convert, the Hindu man commits suicide. In such cases, often, threats are also given to the family members of the Hindu man. Since such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim, leading to the Hindu spouse committing suicide, these cases are categorized as hate crimes.
