Muslim man poses as Hindu to befriend Hindu girl, threatens to leak her private photos when caught
Case Summary
On June 10, 2023, in the Karawal Nagar area of Delhi, a Muslim youth named Shahrukh allegedly misrepresented himself as a Hindu named Golu on Instagram to befriend a Hindu girl. Over time, their friendship developed, but when the girl discovered Shahrukh's true identity, she attempted to distance herself from him. Shahrukh, however, allegedly threatened her with blackmail, including making her compromising photos and videos public and harming her family. The victim filed a complaint, leading to Shahrukh's arrest by the Karawal Nagar police. According to the victim, Shahrukh persistently coerced her into physical relations and harassed her, even molesting her once near her college. The police have confirmed Shahrukh's arrest and are investigating the case, suspecting that Shahrukh may have created a false identity on social media to foster closeness with the victim. Despite these details, the authorities have ruled out the involvement of religious conversion or love jihad, emphasising that Shahrukh did not coerce the girl into converting to Islam.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, a non-Hindu man concealed his religious identity and pretended to be a Hindu to lure a Hindu woman. Since the religious motive of the crime is evident from the fact that the man pretended to be a Hindu to trap a Hindu woman, this case has been documented as a hate crime.
