Case Summary
On June 29, 2023, the Maharashtra Police filed an FIR against 10 identified Muslim individuals and others for brutally attacking Hindu activist Pradyumn Chaudhari, also known as Sonu, with iron rods and sharp weapons in Nanded district's Mahur region. The attack occurred when Sonu tried to stop the sacrifice of bulls on Bakrid, June 29. The accused threatened him and snatched his gold chain during the assault. The identified individuals, including Salim Qureshi, Babu Thekedar, and others, were charged under sections 307 and 395 of the Indian Penal Code, as well as sections 5A, 5B of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, 1976, and section 11(1)(d) of the Animal Cruelty Act, 1960. Sonu, upon receiving a tip-off, reached Tipu Sultan Chowk area and called the Mahur Police Station for assistance. He discovered that bulls were purchased for sacrifice by Salim Qureshi. Qureshi and others attacked Sonu, who was then taken to the hospital by police and is under medical care. Sonu's friend, Atish Shankar Rathod, who filed the complaint, mentioned that Sonu had been targeted by the accused Muslim individuals.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. In this instance, the Hindu was brutally attacked by Muslim men while he was trying to stop the sacrifice of bulls on Bakrid. In Hinduism, cows are considered sacred. The cow is associated with various deities and is integral to many aspects of Hindu culture and rituals. The killing of cows is deeply offensive to Hindus, which is why the Hindu victim was trying to stop the perpetrator from doing so. Notably, there was no provocation from the Hindu victim's side. Muslims were incensed when Hindus merely expressed their opposition to the extremist conduct since killing cows is seen as a direct insult to Hindu religious beliefs. Such derogatory actions are only possible if those who commit them have a great deal of contempt for Hinduism. This instance has been added to the tracker under the following category since the primary driving force behind these activities is disdain for Hindus and their faith.
