Pakistani Hindu girl reveals how her classmates forced her to eat beef and follow Islamic practices, bullied her to become a Muslim

Case Summary
In October 2023, in a video message, a Hindu girl from Pakistan, who was then residing in the United States of America, exposed the repeated oppression and persecution of minorities in Pakistan. She revealed how her Muslim classmates forced her to eat beef and bullied her to become a Muslim against her will. The young girl stated that when she was in elementary and middle school, she was told every single day to convert to Islam. Her brother was bullied, hit and forced to eat beef, she said, adding that her classmates also tried to put beef in her food, but she managed not to eat it. She recalled how she was referred to as a kafir (infidel), a term often used by Muslims to denigrate and harass non-Muslims, especially Hindus and forced to learn the Quran.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. In this subcategory, we would only include cases where the victim was harassed, threatened or coerced to convert. Cases where attempts were made to convert but the victim resisted would be documented in another sub-category. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. In this case, the Hindu victim herself testifies that she was forced to embrace Islam by her Muslim classmates and for this purpose the accused employed intimidatory tactics like forcing the victim to read the Quran and force-feeding the Hindu victim's brother beef to convert her to Islam. She was also humiliated and abused for choosing to practice her professed religion. The details of the case make it evident that the crime was perpetrated with a specific intention to alienate the victims from their Hindu identity, while also harbouring a bias against the Hindu faith, hence this case has been classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under Predatory Proselytisation.
