Case Summary

An incident of attack on Hindus has come to light in Narmada district of Gujarat, like Nuh in Haryana. Stones were pelted at the Shaurya Yatra being taken out by Hindu organizations in the Selamba area here. The Yatra was targeted while passing through a Muslim colony. The miscreants also set shops on fire. According to media reports, Bajrang Dal had organized the Shaurya Yatra between Kuida to Selamba in the Narmada district. Initially, the journey was progressing peacefully. But when the yatra reached the Muslim colony of Selamba, stone pelting started. Some videos of this incident have also surfaced. In this, the crowd is seen pelting stones at Shaurya Yatra and the Hindus participating in it. In a video, people can be seen throwing stones near the mosque. It was reported that along with the attack on the Hindu yatra, the people also set fire to two shops. This entire incident created an atmosphere of chaos in the area. As soon as information about the matter was received, the police reached the spot. The police had to release tear gas shells to control the situation.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the primary category 'attack not resulting in death' under the sub-category 'attacked for crossing Muslim area'. One of the reasons that Hindus get attacked unprovoked specifically by Islamists is for crossing ‘Muslim areas’. Essentially, Muslim mobs often attack Hindus crossing or present in certain areas which have a majority Muslim population. It has often been cited as one of the reasons to blame Hindus for attacks against themselves, signalling that Hindus displaying religious symbols, taking our religious processions or crossing any area which is dominated by Muslim residents is a provocation in and of itself. These areas are mostly ghettoized areas where mobs mobilize quickly to attack Hindus for a variety of reasons like playing music during a religious procession, crossing a mosque, wearing a tilak or any other religious symbol in a Muslim-dominated area, praying at a local temple in that area etc. There have been cases where the few local Hindus of that area have been attacked on their way to the Temple for prayers as well, simply because the area is considered a Muslim-dominated area. Several times, it is entirely possible that the immediate trigger for the violence against Hindus was non-religious in nature, however, the violence became religiously motivated in nature because the area was Muslim dominated and the residents on the whole harboured animosity towards Hindus, evidenced from the actions of the mob, the slogans, and the nature of the attack. Such crimes are motivated by the religious identity of the victims and are therefore classified as hate crimes under this category. In this case, Hindus were taking out a procession which crossed several areas. It only came under attack when it crossed an area with a substantial Muslim population, where stones were seen being hurled from the mosque. This kind of violence stems from deep animosity towards Hindus since the mere presence of Hindus and their religious procession sparks violence from the Muslim community, as seen in this case. For that reason, this case is being added to the hate crime database.
