Case Summary

2 young Bajrang Dal workers were stabbed to death in the wee hours of the night by a Muslim group. The victim were identified as Alok Chaudhury, who died while he was being taken to the hospital after being discovered and Shivam Kumar who was battling for life. The attack took place in the vicinity of Palla Police Station in Faridabad, according to the FIR document. Naveen Kumar Chaudhary, originally a resident of the Bihar district of Madhubani has filed a complaint in the matter. He presently lives in a rented house in Jaitpur, Delhi. Naveen stated that he received information that his youngest son, 21-year-old Alok, was stabbed at 1 AM on Saturday, September 9. It was also asserted that another guy named Shivam was severely beaten in the attack. Rahul Negi, a friend of the deceased, ascribed the attack to the three accused. Alok’s family started searching for him after the incident, and they found him in a severely wounded state in a park in Panchsheel Colony, three hours later. He was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) by them where he passed away during treatment. Notably, the locals have claimed that the two men were brutally killed as they belong to the Bajrang Dal and were actively working against the menace of religiously motivated hate crimes against Hindu women (popularly called Love Jihad). Haryana’s Bajrang Dal official Lalit Bhati spoke to OpIndia about the attack. He revealed that the victims used to fight against love jihad. They saved a girl from the tentacles of the social epidemic some time back. It was later reported in the media that Alok had protested against being called "son" repeatedly by the Muslim mob and in a fit of anger, was murdered by the mob.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case is being added to the primary category 'Attack resulting in death' under two separate sub-categories. The first sub-category is 'Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim'. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Under this category, cases where the attack led to the death of the Hindu victim/s would be documented. The second sub-category this case is being added to is 'attacked for supporting/being part of perceived Hindu party/org or working for Hindu community'. In several cases, Hindus are attacked specifically or tangentially for their association with parties or organizations perceived to be pro-Hindu and/or for working in favor of the Hindu community. One of the classic cases was the attack against a Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha (BJYM) worker Praveen Nettaru. Nettaru was attacked and hacked to death for his association with Hindu organizations and his work for the Hindu community. He was murdered by PFI, a terror organization that aimed to commit a genocide of Hindus, target Hindu leaders specifically, and turn India into an Islamic Nation. In such cases, it is possible that the immediate trigger for the violence is non-religious – either according to the perpetrator or the police. However, there are surrounding circumstances from which the conclusion can be reached that the victim was attacked for his association with a Hindu organization. In a similar case, Rinku Sharma was attacked by radicals. He was a member of Bajrang Dal and regularly worked for the Hindu community. While the police cited a different non-religious trigger for the attack, it is true that he was associated to a Hindu organization and the family of Rinku Sharma specifically attributed his gruesome murder to him working for Bajrang Dal and raising Jai Shree Ram slogans. Such cases are intrinsically driven by religious hate. Under this category, cases where the attack led to the death of the Hindu victim/s would be documented. In this case, the locals of the area and Bajrang Dal itself have attested that the mob of Muslims harboured animosity against the two individuals owing to their association with a Bajrang Dal - an organisation which works for the Hindu community. The victim had worked tirelessly to save Hindu women/girls from religiously motivated hate crimes and had recently saved one such Hindu girl from a Muslim mob. Muslim extremists often harboured doctrinal and scriptural hostility towards non-Muslims, especially Hindus. Scripturally, they believe it is their duty to either convert or kill the 'Kafirs' (a pejorative used for non-Muslims). Hindus are especially considered the enemies given that Hindus don't subscribe to monotheism. This, therefore, leads them to the faith that they have a God-given duty to persecute Hindus. The animosity towards those working towards saving Hindu victims and/or working with organisations involved in working for the Hindu community stems from this doctrinal 'duty'. There is another theory that was later reported that Alok, the victim, took umbrage to being called 'son' repeatedly by the Muslim perpetrators. This would appear to be an innocuous reason to either take umbrage or to go on a stabbing spree for. However, how the violence unfolded hints that the Muslim mob was calling Alok their 'son' to establish superiority over him, given their extremist ideology and to insinuate that Alok, a Hindu activist, was inferior to them. It is the same feeling of hostility and religious supremacist views which led the Muslim mob to murder Alok for his opposition to being called their 'son'. For that reason, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime.
