Dalit man Ram Akbal stabbed to death, doused with acid, dumped in canal by Muslim group in Sitapur

Case Summary
On July 19, 2023, in Sitapur district, Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit man named Ram Akbal was brutally murdered by three Muslim men identified as Paru, Mehendi, and Iqbal, sons of Asgar. They stabbed him to death with knives, poured acid on his body, and dumped him into a canal. The police have arrested all the accused. In response to the heinous crime, a group of women attacked and vandalised the accused's residence, leading to a case being registered against them as well. The incident occurred in area 20 of the Sitapur police station, where Khushiram from Jagannathpur village reported that Ram Akbal had left to buy medicine but was attacked and killed by the perpetrators on his way. The police recovered his body from a canal near Noorpur and initiated an investigation, filing charges under sections 302 and 201 of the Indian Penal Code, along with the SC/ST Act. During the attack on the accused's house, acid bottles and firearms were discovered, raising concerns about their potential connections to external terrorist elements, as noted by Mahant Bajrang Muni. He warned against taking legal action against the women involved in the vandalism and called for transparency from the administration regarding the perpetrators' motives. He criticised the Bhim Army for its lack of response to the incident, considering its advocacy for Dalit rights.

Such attacks could be motivated by religious animosity.
