Case Summary

The dead body of a 20-year-old Hindu girl Mehek Sharma was discovered on the Dibrugarh town bypass at around 4:15 AM in Assam. It is believed that the girl was murdered by an individual identified as Aziz Ahmed alias Munna who later tried to show the incident as an accident. Aziz, who is already married and a father of two kids, wanted the deceased girl to be in a relationship with him. He had been pressuring the girl to accept his proposal and have a relationship with him for six months. The mother of the deceased testified that her daughter was killed because she refused to be in a relationship with the prime suspect Ahmed since she learned that he was already married and a father of two kids.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

There is a strong suspicion in this case that the motive of the relationship and/or the murder was religious in nature. The Muslim perpetrator was already married with children and was forcing the Hindu woman for distancing herself from the relationship after finding out about his marital status. Polygamy is allowed in the religion followed by the perpetrator. Further, doctrinal animosity towards non-Muslims also drives the entitlement where persecution of non-Muslims is considered noble. There is also a suspicion that if the Muslim perpetrator was forcing the woman to maintain a relationship with him and get married, conversion to Islam would be a necessary ingredient of the union. While suspicions exist, from the information available, there is no apparent indication that religion was a part of the motivation either for the relationship or the murder.
