Case Summary

In Aurangabad, UP, on Jahangirabad Road, two young Hindu men, namely, Yogendra and Naveed, were brutally beaten by more than a dozen Muslim men, including Nazim, Asim, Sajid, Sabir, and 10 unknown youths, over a bike parking issue. According to reports, Naveed, a resident of Mahmadpur village in the Aurangabad police station area, had gone with his cousin Yogendra to the Avon Confectionery store on Jahangirabad Road to buy some goods. They parked their bike in front of the shop. Meanwhile, Nazim, a resident of the city, arrived with his bike, which led to an altercation between the two. Nazim argued with and abused both Naveed and Yogendra, the Hindu victims. As the dispute escalated, Nazim called his friends. Shortly thereafter, 10–15 young men arrived at the scene in two vehicles and began brutally beating Naveed and Yogendra. One of the men attacked Naveed with a sharp weapon, seriously injuring him. After committing the crime, all the accused fled the scene. The injured youths then reached the police station and informed the police about the incident. The police immediately took them to Lakhavati CHC. Later, Naveed filed a written complaint against the accused. Upon receiving information about the incident, SP City Shankar Prasad arrived at the Aurangabad police station at around 11 p.m., accompanied by police personnel from Agouta, Khanpur, Syana, and Bibinagar police stations. The police registered an FIR under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against 14 accused persons—four named individuals, including Nazim, Asim, Sajid, and Sabir, along with eight to ten unidentified youths. Subsequently, a series of raids were conducted to trace the accused, during which several unidentified youths were detained and are currently being interrogated.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been included in the Undecided database as there is presently insufficient evidence to conclusively establish that the assault was motivated by religious hostility toward the Hindu victims. Hinduphobia Tracker classifies an incident as a hate crime only when there are clear indicators that the victim’s Hindu religious identity was a motivating factor, rather than the violence arising from a situational dispute or interpersonal conflict. Available reports indicate that the incident originated from an altercation over a bike parking issue outside a shop on Jahangirabad Road. While the violence that followed was severe and disproportionate, including the involvement of multiple assailants and the use of a sharp weapon, current reporting does not document the use of anti Hindu slurs, explicit religious provocation, or ideological statements during the assault that would establish religious targeting at this stage. The escalation of the dispute after one of the accused summoned a group of associates suggests a retaliatory or group violence dynamic rather than a clearly articulated religious motive. Although the victims were Hindu and the accused were identified as Muslim, the available information does not confirm that religious identity was invoked as a basis for the attack, as opposed to the conflict intensifying due to numbers, local rivalry, or criminal aggression. Accordingly, the case has been recorded under the Undecided category. If further evidence emerges during investigation or trial that demonstrates the assault was driven by hostility toward the victims’ Hindu identity, including religious abuse, targeted selection, or ideological intent, the classification will be reviewed and the case will be reassessed for inclusion in the hate crime database.
