Case Summary

A 27-year-old Muslim man named Shadab alias Suheb, son of Miyan, resident of Welcome area stabbed to death, a 20-year-old Hindu youth named Suraj Kumar, over a minor mobile phone dispute on 25th December 2025. The police arrived at the crime scene upon receiving the information that a man had been attacked with a knife near Kabootar Chowk in the Welcome area. Upon their arrival, they found Suraj lying in a pool of blood and took him to GTB Hospital, where he was declared dead. The accused, Shadab, initially fled the scene. But the police used CCTV footage to identify and arrest him in the Welcome area. A knife used in the crime was recovered from Shadab. Police said the dispute occurred when Suraj held Shadab’s mobile phone. This led to an argument between the two. It escalated, and Shadab stabbed Suraj. During the investigation, Shadab told the police that the conflict was regarding the mobile phone. Police also noted that both were intoxicated at the time of the incident. The Welcome area police registered a murder case and began an investigation.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been included in the Undecided database as there is currently insufficient evidence to establish a religious motive behind the crime. Hinduphobia Tracker classifies an incident as a hate crime only when there is a demonstrable element of hostility directed at the victim’s Hindu religious identity. In the absence of such indicators, cases are recorded separately to avoid conflating criminal violence with ideologically driven attacks. Available reports indicate that the incident occurred following a minor dispute related to a mobile phone, which escalated into a fatal stabbing. While the disproportionate nature of the violence is deeply concerning, there is no documented evidence at this stage to suggest that the act was accompanied by anti-Hindu slurs, ideological expressions, or behaviour indicating religious targeting. Severity of violence alone does not meet the threshold for hate crime classification without accompanying bias indicators. Initial investigation has further indicated that both the accused and the victim were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. This factor complicates motive assessment and makes it difficult to isolate intent driven by religious animosity. As such, a clear determination of religious bias cannot be made based on the currently available information. Accordingly, the case has been recorded under the Undecided category. Should additional evidence emerge during investigation or trial that demonstrates religious hostility as a motivating factor, the classification will be reviewed, and the case will be reassessed for inclusion in the hate crime database.
