Case Summary

A Durga temple was attacked in Majgama village of Purnia district, Bihar, by a few unidentified miscreants. The attackers desecrated the sacred idol (Murti) of the Goddess Durga. This incident occurred late on 16 September 2025, and it sparked tension across the area. By morning, news of the desecration spread quickly, and villagers gathered in large numbers, blocking roads and protesting with tyre burnings. Hundreds of residents assembled at the temple premises and on the main road, demanding strict action against those responsible. They declared that attacks on their place of worship were direct assaults on their faith and warned of a larger agitation if the culprits were not arrested and punished. Police teams from Angarh and Rauta stations rushed to the spot. One youth was detained and kept in the panchayat building for questioning. Purnia SP Sweety Sehrawat reached Majgama, inspected the site, and appealed for calm, assuring villagers that the investigation was progressing swiftly and that the guilty would not be spared. Despite assurances, villagers expressed suspicion of a larger conspiracy behind the attack and demanded that the police expose it without delay. The situation was brought under control, though tension remained high in the area.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category in this case is: Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory under this is: Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. Another subcategory in this case is: Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. This case has been added to the Hinduphobia Tracker because it represents a direct attack on the religious identity of Hindus through the desecration of their temple and the vandalism of a consecrated idol of Goddess Durga. For Hindus, a temple is not merely a physical structure but the sanctified abode of the deity. The murti enshrined within is regarded as a living presence, infused with divine energy through consecration and worship. By vandalising the idol, the perpetrators did not damage stone or clay alone but violated the very embodiment of divinity revered by the community. Such an act strikes at the core of Hindu belief. Desecrating a murti severs the spiritual bond between the deity and the devotees, disrupting their rituals, prayers, and sense of continuity in faith. This is why Hindus perceive an attack on a temple or an idol as an assault on their religious existence itself. It is not a matter of property destruction but of spiritual desecration, which is far more grievous. The protesters in Purnia articulated this clearly when they said that the attack was an attack on their faith. The religious motivation behind the incident is evident. The attackers deliberately targeted the iconography of Hinduism, choosing the murti of Goddess Durga inside a temple. In Hindu tradition, such acts are not random vandalism but an expression of hostility toward the faith, intended to intimidate the community, belittle their sacred symbols, and undermine their confidence in freely practising their religion. The unrest in the village, the collective anger of the devotees, and their suspicion of a deeper conspiracy all point to the fact that this was not an isolated act but one grounded in animosity against the Hindu faith. In this incident, although the perpetrators remain unidentified, the act was clearly motivated by religious hostility towards Hindus and their faith. Consequently, this case has been added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: In this case, the police have arrested one suspect.
