Hindu girl coerced to convert to Islam and marry Muslim youth, blackmailed with obscene pictures
Case Summary
In Farrukhabad’s Kampil town, a 19-year-old Hindu student became the target of blackmail and forced conversion by the Muslim teacher of her computer coaching centre. The victim, an intermediate-level student, used to attend a course at a local computer centre. In her written complaint, she stated that the centre operator, Salman, along with his associates Sheebu and Anas, called her into a separate room on the pretext of teaching her. According to the complaint, they laced a cold drink with a sedative and rendered the student unconscious. While she was unconscious, they raped her and recorded a video. After she regained consciousness, they repeatedly raped her while threatening to circulate the video if she resisted. The student says that when she stopped attending the centre, the accused began following her to college. They intercepted her on the road and pressured her to convert and marry. When she informed her family about what traspired, the accused threatened to kill the entire family. Recently, one of the accused mistakenly left his phone behind at the victim’s home, which exposed the crime. On the basis of the victim’s complaint, a case was registered against Salman, Sheebu, and Anas. At the time of documenting this incident in the Hinduphobia Tracker, the Police were conducting searches to apprehend the accused.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This is a religiously motivated hate crime under the category- Predatory proselytisation. The first sub-category selected is- Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. The second sub-category selected here is- Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination. Within this, the tertiary category selected is- Rape and sexual assault/ harassment. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytization, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This case is not just about sexual exploitation but about the deliberate targeting of a Hindu girl to break her religious identity and force her into conversion. The methods used by the accused, rape, blackmail, threats, and pressure to marry, were not random acts of violence but calculated tools of coercion to compel religious change. The use of threats and harassment to force the victim into silence and submission shows a clear attempt to control her choices and push her into adopting a religious identity against her will. The intimidation extended to her entire family, with the accused warning they would be killed if she resisted or spoke out. Such threats expose that the goal was not only to exploit her sexually but to cut her off from her Hindu community and force her into another fold through fear. Equally significant is the grooming process she endured. The accused initially drew her into the trap under the guise of education, exploiting her vulnerability as a young student. Once she was isolated, they systematically manipulated her, drugging her, raping her, filming her assault, and then using the footage as a weapon to blackmail her. This shows a deliberate process of brainwashing and coercive control, where the victim’s autonomy was destroyed step by step to make her more compliant. The use of sexual assault as a tool of conversion underscores the religious animus behind the crime. Rape here was not only a violation of her body but a weapon deployed to shatter her spirit, enslave her through fear, and impose a new religious identity upon her. When combined with repeated demands that she abandon her faith and marry, it becomes clear that her Hindu identity was specifically targeted. Taken together, the calculated grooming, the repeated sexual violence, the threats to her family, and the coercive pressure to convert and marry, this incident represents more than exploitation. It is a hate crime driven by hostility to her Hindu faith, using her vulnerability as a young woman to undermine her identity, family, and community.
