Hindu religious sentiments insulted: Muslim man asserts Islamic supremacy, claims Pakistani team ‘capable of blowing Somnath temple’
Case Summary
Objectionable statements hurting Hindu religious sentiments were made by a Muslim man named Shahnawaz Rana, who presented himself as a cricket analyst. In the lead-up to the India-Pakistan cricket match held in Dubai on 14 September 2025, Rana appeared on the Pakistani YouTube channel 'Sports Roundup' to provide a pre-match analysis of the teams. In an attempt to support the Pakistani cricket team, he made a highly inflammatory statement, claiming that the Pakistani cricket team was capable of blowing up the Somnath temple, drawing an analogy to suggest that the team’s prowess was comparable to carrying out such an act. The statement quickly went viral on social media, provoking widespread outrage. Many users highlighted that, for certain individuals in Pakistan, sports had shifted from being a matter of national pride to a platform for religious war against Hindus. Rana’s remarks were criticised by users who also questioned the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for continuing to normalise cricketing relations with Pakistan despite such inflammatory rhetoric.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of Hate speech against Hindus. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This case has been added to the tracker because objectionable statements deliberately targeting Hindu religious sentiments were made by a Muslim man under the guise of cricket commentary. He sought to project the supposed superiority of the Pakistani cricket team over the Indian team, since it was an India–Pakistan match. He did this by drawing a provocative analogy of blowing up the Somnath temple, a deeply revered Hindu site, to portray the capability or prowess of the Pakistani team. This reference was not a casual or random remark; it was deliberate, intended to insult Hindus and symbolically assert Islamic dominance over Hindu religious symbols. Historically, the Somnath temple has been attacked several times by Islamic rulers, its idols desecrated and plundered, making it a site of immense religious and cultural significance for the Hindu community. In fact, it is a living testament to the sacrifices that the Hindu community made to protect the temple from incoming Islamic invaders. Using it in this context was clearly intended to provoke and demean Hindus by reminding them of past attacks on their faith. It was designed to inflame and demean Hindus by exploiting historical trauma. This was not just about a cricket match; in fact, it took the form of symbolic violence, where a Hindu religious symbol was used to intimidate, humiliate, or dominate a community. By choosing a symbol like the Somnath temple, he deliberately targeted a sacred Hindu site to assert Islamic superiority. In Islamic theology, idol worship, referred to as Shirk, is regarded as the gravest sin. The Qur'an strictly condemns it, and Islamic teachings emphasise the complete rejection of any practice associated with idol worship. Muslims are taught from a young age that idolatry is an unforgivable sin. While this belief is central to the Islamic faith, it has also led, historically and in contemporary times, to intolerance and hostility towards idol-worshipping religions, especially Hinduism. Thus, due to this inherent religious hatred towards Hinduism, Shahnawaz Rana used the Somnath analogy to mock and insult Hindus, deliberately attacking their faith and sacred symbols. The combination of historical, religious, and cultural symbolism made this act a targeted form of hate speech aimed specifically at Hindus.
