Hindu woman targeted for attempted rape by Muslim student leader in Assam
Case Summary
In Goalpara, Assam, a Hindu woman was targeted for attempted rape by a Muslim man named Firoz Ahmed. The accused is a leader of the NSUI, the student wing of the Congress party. According to media reports, the Hindu woman is a student at Goalpara College in Assam. The accused was serving as the sports secretary of the Chhatra Ekta Sabha, an outfit backed by NSUI, in the same college. On the day of the incident, Firoz Ahmed lured the Hindu victim into a room and attempted to rape her. When other students became aware of the woman’s ordeal, they held demonstrations and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused. They also raised slogans such as “We want justice” and “Expel Firoz Ahmed.” Several organisations, including ABVP, Bajrang Dal, AASU and Swajatiya Student Organisation, protested outside the Sadar Police Station demanding strict punishment for the accused. Following this, the Muslim accused was arrested for attempting to rape the Hindu victim. Ahmed was apprehended by the police on the college premises. The accused was then taken into custody by the Goalpara police and remained under police custody.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, a Hindu woman was a victim of attempted rape by a Muslim man named Firoz Ahmed. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed that in many cases, Muslim perpetrators target Hindu women and girls due to inherent animosity towards the Hindu community. Hindu women and girls are very vulnerable to crimes like rape and sexual assault at the hands of Muslim men. However, in this case, it is possible that the crime was one of opportunity, where the Hindu woman was simply accessible to the Muslim perpetrator. Meanwhile, it could also be argued that for a Muslim perpetrator, a Muslim woman would likely be more accessible than a Hindu woman. The fact that the perpetrator specifically targeted a Hindu woman could suggest religious profiling of the victim. Nevertheless, this remains speculative, as the case details provide no clear indication of religious motivations. Furthermore, the victim has not made any statements suggesting a religious motive behind the crime. For this reason, the case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If further information emerges that hints towards a religiously motivated crime, then it would be reclassified and included under the hate crime database.
