Hindu woman raped, forced to convert by Muslim man disguised as a Hindu in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh
Case Summary
A Hindu woman was raped in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, after a Muslim man concealed his identity and befriended her under a Hindu name. The victim, an 18-year-old from Indore, reported that the man introduced himself as Vicky Singh in October 2024, gradually gained her trust, and later lured her to a warehouse in the Industrial Area of Ratlam in March 2025, where he raped her. When she discovered she was pregnant, she went to his house to confront him and then learnt that his real name was Wasim Khan, son of Yusuf Khan. His sister, Roshni Khan, revealed their Muslim identity, warned her not to tell anyone, and gave her abortion pills, which caused a forced miscarriage. After this, Wasim cut all contact with her. A few days later, Wasim again called her to meet in the Industrial Area. During this meeting, he threatened her for speaking about the incident, pressured her to marry him, and demanded that she convert to Islam. Distressed, the young woman confided in her mother, who helped her file a case with the police. Police registered a case against Wasim Khan (20) and his sister Roshni Khan under Sections 64(2), 115(2), 351(3), and 3(j5) of the BNS. Reports also indicate that after the events came to light, Wasim’s father threatened the woman’s relatives, raising the possibility. Wasim was arrested by the police, and Roshni was booked for administering abortion pills and silencing the victim.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category in this case is: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The subcategory under this is: Man pretends to be Hindu. The tertiary category under this: Name changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. Another primary category under this is: Predatory proselytisation. The subcategory under this is: Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because it reflects two interlinked dimensions of religiously motivated violence: deception through religious identity concealment and subsequent coercion aimed at forced religious conversion. The Hindu woman was entrapped after the Muslim perpetrator, Wasim Khan, deliberately assumed a Hindu name, “Vicky Singh,” to establish contact and cultivate a relationship with her. This act of deception was not incidental but deliberate, reflecting malicious intent to target her because of her Hindu identity. By masking his religion, the perpetrator removed the woman’s ability to make an informed choice regarding her relationship and her religious and cultural values. The betrayal of trust was compounded by the sexual exploitation she endured under this deception, followed by an unwanted pregnancy and forced miscarriage facilitated by his sister, Roshni Khan. The element of religious animosity is clear in the progression of the case. Once his true identity was revealed, Wasim attempted to pressure the woman into converting to Islam, threatening her and insisting on marriage on the condition of religious conversion. His sister’s involvement, by administering abortion pills and explicitly warning the victim to remain silent, reinforces the collaborative coercion that extended beyond one individual and into the family unit. Such behaviour underscores an effort not only to conceal the crime but also to erase the Hindu woman’s agency by silencing her and coercing her compliance within a framework of religious dominance. The attempt to force the woman to abandon her Hindu identity after deceiving her into believing he was Hindu reveals deep contempt for her faith. It demonstrates an intent to undermine her autonomy, to strip her of her right to practice her religion, and to impose upon her the identity of the perpetrator’s faith. Forced conversions, whether through threats, deception, or psychological manipulation, are a grave assault on the freedom of religion. In this case, the coercion was not isolated but systematic: deception of name to entrap, rape to establish control, forced miscarriage to erase consequences, and threats combined with religious pressure to break her resistance. The case embodies both “Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes” and “Predatory proselytisation.” It falls under the subcategory of “Man pretends to be Hindu – Name changed,” as the core method of exploitation was religious deception, and under “Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion,” as the woman was later intimidated into renouncing her religion. The trajectory from deceit to coercion demonstrates a consistent pattern of targeting the victim specifically because she was Hindu. Such cases highlight a broader systemic issue where Hindu women are deliberately deceived and coerced into abandoning their faith, reflecting not just individual predation but also an animosity towards Hindu religious identity. By including this incident in the tracker, it is documented as part of the larger pattern of religiously motivated hate crimes, where both deception and coercion are employed to undermine the rights, dignity, and faith of Hindu women. Disclaimer: It is important to note that the media reports on this case have not provided precise dates for when the victim’s ordeal first began. The earliest confirmed timeline, as per the victim’s account, is October 2024, when she first came into contact with the perpetrator under a false Hindu identity. Since Hinduphobia Tracker documents incidents from the point at which the exploitation or deception commenced, and not merely from the date of police reporting, we have recorded 10 October 2024 as a placeholder date, although the case was reported by the media in 10 September 2025.
