Case Summary

In Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Hindu religious customs were deliberately desecrated by a group of Muslims who threw meat pieces near a Ganesh pandal. According to reports, the Bal Ganesh Utsav Samiti had installed the idol of Lord Ganesha on the occasion of Ganesh Utsav. For about three to four consecutive days, the workers of the committee discovered pieces of meat thrown near the pandal. Concerned by these repeated acts of defilement, they began to keep a watch over the area and, in the evening, saw two youths throwing meat pieces nearby. When the workers attempted to stop them, both tried to escape; however, one was caught by the workers while the other managed to flee. The apprehended youth was identified as Ahfaz and belonged to the Muslim community. The committee workers, along with members of a Hindu organisation, took the Muslim youth to the police station, demanding strict action for hurting Hindu religious sentiments. As of the date of writing this report, the police registered an FIR against three Muslim youths – Ahfaz, Sarfaraz and Mohammad Faizan Ali. While Ahfaz was arrested by the police, the other two were absconding. During the investigation, the police discovered that the accused were bringing meat pieces from a mutton shop at Raja Chowk, owned by Mohammad Faizan Ali, and deliberately throwing them near the pandal. On this basis, cases were registered under Section 302 and 3(5) of the BNS for inciting religious sentiments.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category in this case is: Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory under this is: Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. Another subcategory under this is: Defiling religious customs. Sanatan Dharma is not a religion of one book, which is to say that while it has religious scriptures that form the central tenets of the faith, there are several traditions followed through thousands of years, mostly passed from generation to generation orally. There are several such customs and traditions that are followed by various Hindus and Hindu sects. Defiling of these traditions and customs is a breach of an individual or group’s religious practices. Such practices can range from dietary restrictions like not eating non-vegetarian food for a certain period of the year, not eating non-vegetarian food at all, not eating beef since the cow is considered holy in Hinduism, the sanctity of religious customs followed in the house (like many ISCKON devotees), etc. Any malicious action leading to the breach of such traditions or defilement of these traditions owing to animosity towards the faith or for the sake of activism stems not only from the lack of faith in the religion itself but also from disregard for the faith of the devotees who follow the customs/traditions and implicit bias against the faith, the tradition itself. Since these specific traditions are central to the faith of the devotees of that specific sect of Hindus, any non-compliance with these traditional rules would be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. This case has been added to the tracker because pieces of meat were deliberately thrown near the Ganesh pandal by a group of Muslim youths. Ganesh Utsav is a deeply cherished Hindu festival marked by purity, devotion, and celebration. Devotees bring idols into their homes and communities, following strict customs of sanctity. Throwing pieces of meat at the Ganesh pandal is a direct act of desecration and defilement of these religious customs. Meat, being considered impure and especially inappropriate in a religious context, was deliberately used to pollute the sanctity of the idol. This action was not random mischief but a targeted attempt to insult and humiliate Hindus by attacking one of their most important religious icons during one of their most significant festivals. It disrespects centuries-old traditions of worship and purity central to the celebration. The intent was to disrupt and violate Hindu practices, making this not just an attack on a murti but an assault on the religious customs of an entire community. Such acts of defilement, as demonstrated in this case, are regarded as deeply offensive and sacrilegious to Hindus. Such actions reflect a profound disregard for the Hindu faith and its practices, rooted in underlying animosity towards Hinduism. This incident exemplifies an intentional effort to insult religious sentiments, warranting its classification as a crime motivated by hatred towards Hindus and their faith. It cannot be regarded merely as a breach of law and order, but rather as a calculated attempt to dishonour Hindu religious customs, especially those related to religious purity and ritual observance. This demonstrates a profound disregard for Hindu religious sites, sacred spaces, and customs. Therefore, this case is being added to the hate crime database. Disclaimer: Media reports state that the recent incident of defilement of the Ganesh pandal took place on 4th September 2025. However, the same reports also mention that the act of throwing meat pieces had been occurring for the past three to four days. Therefore, 31st August 2025 is being taken as the indicative date to represent the beginning of these defilement incidents. The Hinduphobia Tracker records the date based on when the crime began rather than when it was reported in the media.
