Case Summary

On 2 September 2025, police in the Hazratganj area of Lucknow discovered 20 kilograms of beef in a multi-level parking lot, leading to the arrest of a man named Mohd. Wasif. The meat was found inside a black Thar parked on the first floor of the parking lot, which had no number plate. Police officers became suspicious of the vehicle during a routine check and questioned Wasif, who claimed ownership of the car. Outpost in charge Shivani Singh and her team searched the vehicle and discovered several carry bags filled with beef. The police immediately sealed the car and took it into custody, arresting Wasif on the spot. Authorities doubted the meat was intended for distribution, though Wasif was apprehended before it could be transported. A case was registered under the Cow Slaughter Act, and the meat was sent for forensic examination. The car remained impounded at the police station while investigations continued.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The seizure of beef in this case raises strong concerns about religious animosity towards Hindus as a potential motive behind the crime. In Hinduism, the cow is regarded as sacred and holds deep religious and cultural significance. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef), and desecrate Hindu temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is always a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor. However, in the absence of any concrete evidence that the crime was religiously motivated, this case is being categorised under the 'Undecided' database. If more details emerge that demonstrate religious animosity as a motivating factor behind the crime, then it will be added to the hate crime database.
