Case Summary

In Palwal, Haryana, a Hindu woman was gang-raped by two Muslim men named Javed and Dilshad. According to reports, the victim's husband drives an auto and often arrives late at night. Taking advantage of this, both the accused entered her house at night while she was sleeping with her two children. They began molesting the Hindu woman, and when she resisted, they threatened to kill her. After which, they raped her, and both men fled the scene. They also threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident. The victim, deeply traumatised by the incident, disclosed everything to her husband when he returned home. The next day, the couple went to the Bahin police station and lodged a formal complaint. A case was registered, and the police initiated a search operation to apprehend the accused.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, a Hindu woman was molested and gang-raped by two Muslim men, while her husband was not at home. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as in several cases, Muslim perpetrators have targeted Hindu women and girls due to religious animosity towards Hindus and their faith. Hindu women and girls are particularly vulnerable to crimes such as rape and sexual assault. The fact that the accused knew the victim’s husband was not present suggests prior knowledge of the family and, by extension, of the victim’s religious identity, which further indicates religious profiling. However, it is also possible that the crime was opportunistic, with the victim targeted primarily because she was accessible and alone, making her more vulnerable. Some may argue that the Muslim perpetrators specifically targeting a Hindu girl could also suggest religious profiling, but this remains highly speculative. At present, there is no clear evidence indicating religious motivations behind the crime, and neither the victim nor her husband has provided any statements suggesting a religious motive. For this reason, the case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If any further information emerges indicating a religious motivation behind the crime, it will be reclassified and included in the hate crime database.
