Hindu girl lured away and coerced into conversion by Muslim youth with help of madrasa principal
Case Summary
A Hindu girl was lured away by a Muslim youth named Badhu alias Sirajuddin from a village under Pataherwa police station in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. She was coerced into converting to Islam.. The girl’s father submitted a written application to the Superintendent of Police, stating that the principal of a madrasa in the Tamkuraj police station area had sheltered the Muslim youth and kept the girl hidden inside the madrasa. He further stated in the complaint that both the madrasa principal and the Muslim youth were pressuring his daughter to convert. When the police began searching actively, the madrasa principal brought the girl in his car near the Tamkuhiraj overbridge and fled the spot. The girl confirmed to her family that she was coerced into accepting conversion by the madrasa principal, along with the Muslim youth. Acting on the complaint, the SP directed the police to record her statement. Patherwa police station in-charge, Vinay Kumar Mishra, confirmed that an investigation was underway based on the father’s allegations.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category in this case is: Predatory Proselytisation. The subcategory under this is: Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination. The tertiary category under this is: Victim says was brainwashed/groomed. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to the existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytisation, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. The incident in Kushinagar illustrates a case of religiously motivated predation where coercive pressures were employed to detach a Hindu girl from her family and faith. The Muslim youth did not act in isolation but was aided by an institution vested with the responsibility of religious instruction: the madrasa. The principal of the madrasa not only concealed the girl but also actively collaborated in persuading her to renounce her religious identity. This reveals the calculated nature of the crime, for the effort extended beyond the act of abduction into a deliberate scheme of indoctrination. The role of the madrasa principal in this case reflects a religiously motivated hate crime, as he used his position to shelter the accused and actively coerce the Hindu girl into abandoning her faith. By exploiting his authority and influence, the principal became a direct facilitator of predatory proselytisation. Such cases embody the characteristics of a hate crime because they are not directed merely at an individual but at the cultural and religious identity of a community. The victim’s Hindu faith was targeted as an object of hostility and erasure, with the perpetrators attempting to replace it with allegiance to Islam. Hence, this case is categorised as a hate crime.
