Case Summary

A statue of Lord Ganesha came under attack in Vadodara, Gujarat, when eggs were hurled at it in a Muslim-majority locality during Ganeshotsav preparations. On 26 August 2025, Hindu youth were carrying the idol home when the attack took place. The incident triggered outrage among local Hindus, with organisations demanding justice. Police immediately registered a case and launched an investigation. Within hours, three perpetrators were caught with the help of CCTV footage and intelligence inputs. They were identified as Sufyan Salim Mansuri, Shahnawaz Mohammad Irshad Qureshi, and a minor who has been detained. Joint Commissioner of Police Leena Patil confirmed the arrests and said further inquiry was underway to determine whether others were also involved. Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Vishnu Prajapati stated that the act was part of a pre-planned conspiracy. He pointed out that the attack took place in a Muslim-majority area, from the Madar Market building, largely inhabited by Muslims, and in the presence of police. According to him, eggs were thrown simultaneously from both sides of the road, targeting not just the idol but also Hindu activists. He demanded the arrest of all those involved and called for strict punishment, worrying that such attacks would recur if strong action was not taken.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category in this case is: Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory under this is: Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. Another subcategory under this is: Defiling religious customs. Sanatan Dharma is not a religion of one book, which is to say that while it has religious scriptures that form the central tenets of the faith, there are several traditions followed through thousands of years, mostly passed from generation to generation orally. There are several such customs and traditions that are followed by various Hindus and Hindu sects. Defiling of these traditions and customs is a breach of an individual or group’s religious practices. Such practices can range from dietary restrictions like not eating non-vegetarian food for a certain period of the year, not eating non-vegetarian food at all, not eating beef since the cow is considered holy in Hinduism, the sanctity of religious customs followed in the house (like many ISCKON devotees), etc. Any malicious action leading to the breach of such traditions or defilement of these traditions owing to animosity towards the faith or for the sake of activism stems not only from the lack of faith in the religion itself but also from disregard for the faith of the devotees who follow the customs/traditions and implicit bias against the faith, the tradition itself. Since these specific traditions are central to the faith of the devotees of that specific sect of Hindus, any non-compliance with these traditional rules would be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. Another category in this case is: Attack not resulting in death. The subcategory under this is: Attacked for crossing 'Muslim area.' One of the reasons that Hindus get attacked unprovoked specifically by Islamists is for crossing ‘Muslim areas’. Essentially, Muslim mobs often attack Hindus crossing or present in certain areas which have a majority Muslim population. It has often been cited as one of the reasons to blame Hindus for attacks against themselves, signalling that Hindus displaying religious symbols, taking our religious processions or crossing any area which is dominated by Muslim residents is a provocation in and of itself. These areas are mostly ghettoized areas where mobs mobilize quickly to attack Hindus for a variety of reasons like playing music during a religious procession, crossing a mosque, wearing a tilak or any other religious symbol in a Muslim-dominated area, praying at a local temple in that area etc. There have been cases where the few local Hindus of that area have been attacked on their way to the Temple for prayers as well, simply because the area is considered a Muslim-dominated area. Several times, it is entirely possible that the immediate trigger for the violence against Hindus was non-religious in nature, however, the violence became religiously motivated in nature because the area was Muslim dominated and the residents on the whole harboured animosity towards Hindus, evidenced from the actions of the mob, the slogans, and the nature of the attack. Such crimes are motivated by the religious identity of the victims and are therefore classified as hate crimes under this category. This case has been added to the tracker because the Ganeshotsav procession came under attack in a Muslim dominated locality. Ganeshotsav is a deeply cherished Hindu festival marked by purity, devotion, and celebration. Devotees bring idols into their homes and communities, following strict customs of sanctity. Throwing eggs at a Ganesha Murti in the middle of Ganeshotsav is a direct act of desecration and defilement of these customs. Eggs, being considered impure and especially inappropriate in a religious context, were deliberately used to pollute the sanctity of the idol. This action was not random mischief but a targeted attempt to insult and humiliate Hindus by attacking one of their most important religious icons during one of their most important festivals. Such desecration constitutes a hate crime because it stems from animosity toward the Hindu faith and its representations. It disrespects centuries-old traditions of worship and purity central to the celebration. The intent was to disrupt and violate Hindu practices, making this not just an attack on a murti but an assault on the religious customs of an entire community. The attack occurred when the Hindu youth carrying the idol passed through a Muslim-majority locality. Eggs were thrown not from one point but simultaneously from both sides of the road, indicating coordination and planning. This shows the attack was not spontaneous but premeditated, intended to target Hindus for simply conducting a religious procession through an area dominated by another community. Such hostility, where Hindus are assaulted for displaying their religious symbols in public or crossing through Muslim-majority areas, reflects a pattern of communal animosity. In this case, the combination of factors, desecration of the Ganesha idol, violation of religious customs, and the pre-planned attack in a Muslim-majority area, makes it clear that this was not an isolated act of mischief but a deliberate hate crime against Hindus. It was designed to provoke, insult, and threaten the Hindu community during one of their most sacred festivals.
