Ancient Shiva temple attacked in Chhattisgarh: idols desecrated and remains thrown into pond

Case Summary
In Munda village, within the Lawan police station area of Baloda Bazar district, Chhattisgarh, a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was targeted by unknown miscreants. The idols of Lord Shiva, installed within the temple premises, were desecrated, and some of the remains were thrown into the nearby pond. As soon as news of the incident spread, tension and anger gripped the entire village. After the incident, a large number of villagers gathered at the temple and demanded the arrest of those responsible. With the situation deteriorating, the police arrived immediately and pacified the villagers through persuasion. The police inspected the site and collected evidence. The villagers stated that this act had wounded the religious sentiments of the community, describing it as an attack on their faith and demanding action against the culprits. Several Hindu community members urged the authorities to take strict action so that similar incidents would not recur in the future. Given the seriousness of the incident, the police took a suspect from the village into custody for questioning. Patrols in the surrounding areas were also increased. The Station House Officer of Lawan police station stated that the incident was under investigation and assured that the culprits would be apprehended soon. He appealed to the villagers to maintain peace. Reports also confirmed that the Shiva temple in Munda village is considered the centre of faith for the local community. Worship and religious programmes were conducted daily. The desecration of the idols caused deep resentment among devotees.
