Case Summary

In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, a 26-year-old Hindu woman was lured into a relationship by a Muslim man who was pretending to be Hindu. The accused, Aman Khan, introduced himself as Aman Sahu to deceive the Hindu victim. Then, he sexually exploited the victim under the pretext of marriage and forced her to convert to Islam. The victim was also subjected to physical violence by the Muslim accused. According to media reports, the Hindu victim, originally from Sehore, worked in a private company while living in a rented house in the Palda area in Indore. She explained that she had become friends with Aman on Instagram eight months earlier. His profile was under the name 'Aman Sahu'. The two began chatting online, during which the accused lured the victim into a relationship. After two months of conversation, in February 2025, Aman visited her rented house for the first time and sexually exploited her under the pretext of marriage. It was only after this that she discovered his real name was Aman Khan. When the victim questioned him, the accused assured her that he would marry her and even said he would leave Islam for her. However, some time later, his behaviour turned violent. He began assaulting her and prevented her from going to the temple. When she pressured him to marry, he refused to leave his faith and insisted that marriage would happen only if she converted to Islam. Following this, on 5th August 2025, the accused physically assaulted the victim. After this, he stopped visiting her house. Initially, the Hindu victim remained silent out of fear and social stigma. However, the Muslim accused continued to threaten her and pressured her into further sexual relations. Distressed by constant harassment, she confided in Bajrang Dal workers, who then accompanied her to the police station. A case was registered against the accused, Aman Khan, and a police investigation subsequently began.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Man pretends to be Hindu. The tertiary category selected is- Name Changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The other subcategory selected is- Brainwashed and/or Groomed. The tertiary category selected is- Rape and sexual assault/harassment. In our database, we have not added incidents where women have converted to another religion of their free will and no allegations of forced/involuntary conversion have been made. However, there are certain cases of conversion where the consent itself is a result of the brainwashing or grooming of a minor by the non-Hindu perpetrator trying to victimise a woman for her Hindu religious identity. The phenomenon of grooming points to non-Hindu perpetrators identifying their Hindu victims’ vulnerabilities and exploiting them over months and sometimes years, to extract the supposed ‘consent’ in order to convert their religion. In most cases of grooming, the victims are minors or the grooming started when the victim was a minor. In other cases of grooming, the non-Hindu perpetrator brainwashes and grooms a minor victim to extract their trust and then proceeds to rape them repeatedly with the intent of converting them to their faith. It is pertinent to understand here that when the victim is a minor, the ‘consent’ to convert or enter into a romantic relationship with an adult itself is redundant – addressed by POCSO. While every case of conversion of a minor and incidents of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime, for the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. For example, in the UK, if a Hindu minor is targeted by Pakistani grooming gangs, it would be considered a hate crime because the victims are specifically targeted owing to their non-Muslim religious identity with the perpetrators being Muslim. In other cases, if a Hindu minor is brainwashed into entering a physical relationship with the non-Hindu adult perpetrator and the family alleges grooming/brainwashing of the minor to convert her religion, it would form a part of this database. If the victim is a Hindu adult, the case would form a part of this database only if the victim herself says that she was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. However, if the victim is deceased (murdered or otherwise), the case would form a part of this database if her family/friends provided testimony that the victim was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. Since these crimes have a distinct religious angle where the victim is being targeted owing to her Hindu religious identity, these cases are considered a hate crime. The other subcategory selected is- Forced conversion before marriage. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The other subcategory selected is- Assault or threat upon refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces threats or assault after she refuses to convert and change her religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert to Islam and upon her refusal, assaults or threatens the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. In this case, the Hindu woman was deceived into a relationship under the promise of marriage by a Muslim man pretending to be Hindu. After this, she was pressured to convert to Islam by the perpetrator. Firstly, the Muslim perpetrator's act of deception by hiding his Muslim identity and posing as a Hindu itself demonstrates a clear bias and malicious intent towards the victim’s religion. By hiding his true identity, the Muslim man manipulated the Hindu woman's trust and targeted her under false pretences, indicating a premeditated effort to exploit the woman based on her religious background. This constituted a direct violation of her right to informed consent regarding whom she chooses to marry, as well as an infringement upon her religious beliefs. Thus, the perpetrator’s deliberate decision to hide his religious identity strongly underscores the religious motive behind this crime. In such instances, identity concealment is not just a deceptive tactic for personal reasons but a calculated strategy rooted in religious profiling and targeting. The Muslim accused was aware that the victim, being Hindu, would likely refuse his advances if she knew his real identity, and he circumvented this by lying, which directly points to a religiously driven intent. This deception reflects a larger pattern where Hindu women are specifically singled out using false identities, often with coercion or conversion in mind. Such targeted victimisation based on religion demonstrates a fundamental disregard for Hinduism and the Hindu community. After the initial deception, the Hindu victim was sexually exploited by the Muslim perpetrator. When the victim discovered his real identity, he attempted to manipulate her by promising that he would leave Islam for her sake and then marry her. However, soon afterwards, he resumed exploiting her. This demonstrated that the exploitation was not a random act but rather a targeted assault on a Hindu woman because of her religious identity. The coercion, manipulation, and violation she endured underscored the religiously motivated nature of this attack. Such exploitation of Hindu women, rooted in prejudice against their faith, represents not only an assault on the individual but on her Hindu identity itself. The Muslim perpetrator then escalated his coercion by forcing her to convert to Islam. Forcing anyone to renounce their faith strikes at the very core of religious hatred. This was not simply cruelty within a personal relationship but an outright attack on the victim’s freedom of conscience and religious autonomy. This act revealed a deep intolerance towards her Hindu identity, as she was not accepted for who she was. Instead, the perpetrator sought to erase her very existence as a Hindu woman and impose Islam upon her. Such coercion reflects profound religious animosity, targeted not only against an individual but against the wider Hindu community and Hinduism itself. The Hindu victim was also subjected to physical assault and intimidation because of her Hindu identity. The perpetrator even curtailed her freedom of worship by preventing her from going to Hindu temples, further pressuring her through repeated acts of violence to abandon her faith. These actions clearly showed that the crime was not motivated by personal disputes but by entrenched hostility towards the Hindu religion and culture. Violence and coercion were deployed with the clear aim of stripping the victim of her Hindu identity, making it a religiously motivated crime. The victim was also continually forced into unwanted sexual relations. This form of repeated abuse amounted to dehumanisation, carried out precisely because of her Hindu identity. In targeting her sexuality alongside her faith, the perpetrator made it clear that the aim was to humiliate, degrade, and control her as a Hindu woman. Such layered abuse—sexual, physical, psychological, and religious—illustrates the intensity of religious animosity that drove this crime. Such actions are rooted in Islamic theology, which promotes the sexual violation and exploitation of non-Muslim women at the hands of Muslim men. Therefore, this showcases that crime was motivated by doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu woman and her faith, making it a religiously motivated offence. Given that this case meets multiple parameters of a religiously motivated hate crime, it is being recorded in the hate crime database. Disclaimer: Media reports do not specify the exact date when the victim’s ordeal began. However, it does state that her ordeal began 8 months ago. The incident was reported in the media on 20th August 2025. Therefore, for the purpose of documentation, 20th December 2024 is being used as the indicative date of the incident. The Hinduphobia Tracker records an incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, rather than the later date when it was reported in the media.
