Case Summary

In Basti, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu youth named Arjun was brutally attacked after he confronted a Muslim boy, Sahil, for molesting and harassing his sister. According to reports, the Muslim accused had been harassing and molesting Arjun's sister. On 16 August 2025, Arjun went to the accused's house to complain and confront him about the harassment. The accused and his family members became furious and reacted violently. Instead of addressing the misconduct, they brutally attacked Arjun and chopped off three of his fingers with an axe. Arjun was critically injured and taken to a private hospital before being referred to Lucknow Medical College due to the seriousness of his condition. The attack sparked outrage among local Hindu organisations, with Vishwa Hindu Mahasangh’s district president, Akhilesh Singh and other activists visiting the hospital to meet the victim’s family before proceeding to the police station, demanding strict action against the accused. As of the date of writing this report, the police registered a case and swiftly arrested five accused connected to the assault.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of - Attack not resulting in death. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu youth was brutally attacked by a Muslim accused and his family. The Hindu youth was attacked only because he confronted the accused over his actions. This is on the lines of a larger pattern where any opposition to the actions of members of the Muslim community results in violent retaliation, especially when the victim is Hindu. Such acts of violence against Hindus are not isolated or spontaneous incidents; rather, they are driven by deep-seated religious animosity towards the Hindu community and Islamic supremacist ideology, which views non-Muslims as inherently inferior. This results in hostility towards non-Muslims, especially Hindus, when Hindus assert their rights, seek justice, or refuse to submit or comply with the demands of the Muslim community. In supremacist interpretations of Islam, religious dominance is enforced not just through symbolism but also by controlling public spaces, suppressing non-Muslims, and punishing them for any perceived disrespect or even minor opposition. Thus, any act of resistance by Hindus, even when legitimate, is treated as provocation by the Muslim community, resulting in violent retaliation against Hindus. In this case, the Muslim accused and his family violently attacked Arjun simply because he confronted them over the molestation of his sister. This indicates that the harassment itself was a religiously motivated hate crime, and the subsequent violent retaliation for resisting it served to reinforce the same supremacist behaviour. Such retaliatory violence reinforces the climate of fear and impunity around these acts and is part of a larger pattern of silencing or punishing those who oppose religiously motivated abuse, making this a religiously motivated hate crime.
