Case Summary

On Independence Day, a Muslim teacher made children chant slogans in the name of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the Muslim leader responsible for the Partition of Bharat. The incident is from the Government Primary School, Sarsaiya, in South Saghar Sultanpur Panchayat under Bhagwanpur Hat block. The headmaster of the school, Brijendra Dwivedi, confirmed the incident and stated that the teacher involved had been severely reprimanded. Block Development Officer (BDO) Kumar Vishal also confirmed that the matter had come under official notice and directed the Block Education Officer to conduct an immediate inquiry. Based on a complaint by PSI Chapit Kumar Chaubey, an FIR was registered against the teacher, identified as Shamim Ansari, a resident of Sarsaiya. Police took the matter seriously and conducted inquiries in the village throughout the evening to verify details of the incident. When attempts were made to contact the in-charge Block Education Officer, Rakesh Kumar, his phone remained switched off. BDO Kumar Vishal stated that both the police and the education department had initiated proceedings and assured that the truth would come out once the school reopened after a three-day holiday. The incident has sparked widespread anger in the area. News that children were made to chant slogans in Jinnah’s name on Independence Day deeply offended the local Hindu community. Hindu organisations, including Hindu Yuva Vahini, Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, and BJP, expressed strong resentment. BJP’s East District General Secretary, Avadhesh Kumar Pandey, condemned the act, declaring that chanting anti-national slogans while living in Bharat amounts to treason. He demanded the arrest of the accused teacher, termination from service, and that he be charged with sedition. Other leaders, including Basant Mishra, Kali Charan Prajapati, and Sunil Thakur, also expressed anger, stressing that such acts prove that some individuals, while benefiting from Bharat, are engaged in anti-national activities. The incident continues to draw sharp reactions and calls for strict action.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Hate Speech against Hindus. Within this, the subcategory selected is - Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. On Independence Day, when the nation remembers the sacrifices of freedom fighters who resisted colonialism and Partition, making schoolchildren chant slogans in the name of Muhammad Ali Jinnah amounts to glorifying the very figure responsible for the bloody Partition of Bharat. Jinnah was the leader who pushed for the creation of Pakistan, which came at the cost of millions of Hindu lives, widespread massacres, displacement, and persecution. Elevating Jinnah’s name in a school setting is not a neutral act; it directly mocks the pain, memory, and suffering of Hindus who bore the brunt of Partition. By introducing this slogan in a school on such a sacred occasion, the teacher engaged in hate speech targeted against Hindus, knowing that Jinnah’s legacy is historically associated with violence, humiliation, and oppression of Hindus. Here, a few may argue that making children chant slogans in praise of Muhammad Ali Jinnah on Independence Day can be considered anti-India and pro-Pakistan, but not necessarily anti-Hindu. However, glorifying Jinnah directly embodies anti-Hindu animosity. Jinnah was the very architect of Partition, which was rooted in the belief that Muslims could not coexist with Hindus within one nation. Partition led to massacres, displacement, and brutal persecution of Hindus, and the memory of Jinnah continues to be associated with that trauma. It is pertinent to note that Muslim extremists harbour specific animosity towards Hindus and their faith. They also view India as a Hindu collectivity. The very basis of the partition of India was that the Muslims believed that Islam was a nation unto itself, which could not survive with a Hindu collectivity like India. Further, Muslims often believe in transnational unity - or the Ummah - which is a belief that all Muslims across the world are a nation unto themselves and therefore, loyalty as far as the nation-state is concerned lies with the Muslim collectivity and not with a Hindu collectivity like India. By invoking Jinnah’s name on Independence Day, the teacher not only expressed allegiance to a separatist legacy but also mocked the Hindu community’s sacrifices for Bharat’s freedom. Such expressions of transnational loyalty give rise to anti-Hindu sentiments. Consequently, any form of support for Pakistan that reflects transnational allegiance of Muslims and identification with the Ummah is automatically against Hindus and the Hindu collectivity. Thus, this case is added to the hate crime database.
