Case Summary

In a village in the Aurangabad Police Station area of Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu woman was abducted by a Muslim man, leading to heightened tensions in the village. According to media reports, Hindu organisations surrounded the police station, demanding the recovery of the abducted woman. The Hindu victim, a resident of a village in the Khanpur Police Station area, had married a man from a village in the Aurangabad Police Station area on 20th January 2025. Following this, on 20th June 2025, a man from the Muslim community abducted her from her in-laws’ house. Following this, the woman’s husband filed an FIR against the accused, who had taken her from her marital home. Despite the FIR, the police did not take swift action over the following six days. Frustrated by the police’s lack of action, office-bearers from various Hindu organisations gathered at Aurangabad Police Station and staged a sit-in at the main gate. The protesters demanded that four additional names be added to the FIR and called for a case to be registered under sections related to 'love jihad'. The police assured the activists that further action would be taken based on the victim’s statement and that the woman would be located within four days, which satisfied the protesters. The protest saw the participation of Ravi Chikara, Dayaram, Aditya Verma, Nempal Singh, Jeevan, Ankit, Ravi Bajrangi, Kapil Rajput, Vipin Saini, Krish Saini, Jagjit Singh, Sonu Lodhi, Alok Mahur, Lalit Lodhi, and several others.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, the husband of an adult Hindu woman stated that his wife was kidnapped by a Muslim youth. Hindu organisations described the incident as a case of 'Love Jihad'. Here, it is crucial to note that at Hinduphobia Tracker, we have recorded numerous similar cases where Hindu women and underage girls have been kidnapped or lured by Muslim men, subsequently coerced into converting to Islam and subjected to exploitation. Such incidents demonstrate a pattern of deep-rooted religious bias and animosity directed at the victims and their Hindu identity. These actions are committed with the underlying goal of religious conversion and constitute clear examples of religiously motivated crimes. Therefore, the concerns of the victim's husband and Hindu activists cannot be dismissed, especially in the context of established patterns where Hindu women and minor girls are selectively targeted, exploited, and forcibly converted by Muslim men. However, it is equally important to recognise that the woman involved is an adult. Therefore, she is fully capable of making her own decisions regarding personal relationships. She has the legal right to choose her partner, elope, adopt any religion, and marry as she wishes, provided her actions are consensual and free from force, duress, deception, or coercion. Given that she is an adult, it remains entirely possible that she acted voluntarily without coercion. While the husband's account is significant, it should not be taken at face value in the absence of a statement from the woman herself, especially considering factors such as emotional distress and social stigma, which may influence his perspective. At Hinduphobia Tracker, we adhere to rigorous standards before categorising any incident as a religiously motivated hate crime. In this instance, as the woman is an adult and there is currently no direct evidence of religious motivations behind the crime, we are adding this case to the Undecided database. If any further information emerges indicating a religious motivation or confirming aspects of coercion, we will review the case and add it to the hate crime database.
