Hindu temple attacked, temple idols desecrated, and priest's wife threatened for opposing attack
Case Summary
In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddesses Kali and Santoshi was attacked by a man named Sant Lal. He vandalised the sacred idols of Kali and Santoshi and threatened the temple priest’s wife when she opposed the desecration. According to media reports, the temple was located in the residential complex of Lucknow University, where teachers’ residences are situated. It stood next to the home of the Controller of Examinations, Vidyanand Tripathi, and contained idols of several gods and goddesses visited by teachers and university staff for worship. According to teachers, the idols of Mata Santoshi and Mata Kali were discovered broken on 27th June 2025. Shivam Mishra, the temple priest, stated that at around 5 pm on the day of the incident, Sant Lal, an employee in the construction department, vandalised the idols. The priest’s wife, Kanak Mishra, witnessed the act and was threatened when she tried to intervene and oppose the attack. This incident provoked strong anger from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of a Hindu organisation. The group demanded firm action against Sant Lal and warned of protests if the authorities failed to respond. Vikas Tiwari and Vindhyavasini Shukla, members of the organisation, insisted that the university administration take strict measures against the employee responsible, stating that otherwise students would resort to forceful protest, for which the university administration would be held accountable. They also called for the immediate and proper reinstallation of the statues and insisted that the university must act robustly against those responsible for such religious harm. After the incident, a crowd of staff and teachers gathered at the site, expressing outrage at the vandalism. Following this, a complaint was initially lodged at the campus police post, followed by a report at the Hasanganj police station. The police subsequently arrested Sant Lal. After this, new idols of the goddesses were being installed in the temple.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The other subcategory selected is- Attack on temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, the attack was launched at a Hindu temple and its sacred idols. Hindu temples are institutions that hold profound spiritual, cultural, and social significance for Hindus. These sacred spaces are not just places of worship; they are central pillars of community life, fostering a sense of unity, tradition, and collective identity. Within their sanctuaries, devotees find solace, spiritual guidance, and continuity with their ancient heritage. An attack against a Hindu temple is, therefore, not merely an act of vandalism but a direct affront to the beliefs, traditions, and dignity of the Hindu community. Such attacks on Hindu temples are rooted in animosity towards the Hindu community and their religious beliefs, making it an instance of a religiously motivated crime. The attack involved the desecration of the idols of the goddesses. The idols enshrined within a temple are the very heart of Hindu worship. For Hindus, these murtis (idols) are manifestations of the divine deities, objects of deep reverence and love. The desecration of such idols is not simply the destruction of art; it's a calculated act to wound the spiritual core of the faith, shake the community's confidence, and signal hostility towards Hindu beliefs. To desecrate temple idols is to enact a hate crime that seeks to erase or degrade Hindu religious practice, further underscoring the anti-Hindu nature of the offence. Moreover, the fact that the accused, Sant Lal, threatened the temple priest’s wife when she opposed the desecration removes any doubt about the intentional, targeted, and conscious nature of the attack. This act of intimidation against a Hindu individual speaking up for her faith transforms the crime from senseless vandalism to a deliberate campaign against Hindus and their religious beliefs. Together, the attack on the temple, the desecration of sacred idols, and the intimidation of the priest’s wife constitute a clear example of anti-Hindu hate. These acts reflect not just intolerance but a premeditated attack on the places of worship and the religious sentiments of the Hindu community. Given that this case meets multiple parameters of a religiously motivated crime, this case is being added to the hate crime database.
