Case Summary

In Nuh district, near the village of Mohammad Bas, under the jurisdiction of Pingawan police station, police intercepted a motorcycle carrying beef intended for supply to nearby villages. During routine patrolling at Sikarawa Mor, Pingawan police received information that Salman, a resident of Raniyala Patakpur, had been engaged in cow slaughter and supplying beef to villages. Acting on this tip-off, police set up a checkpoint. A short while later, the accused approached on his motorcycle. When signalled to stop, he left the motorcycle on the road and escaped through nearby fields before the police could apprehend him. On inspection, the motorcycle was found loaded with beef packed in separate polythene bags, with a total weight of around 60 kilograms. According to the informer, the accused had been supplying beef in villages for a considerable period. A case was registered against him, and police teams were conducting raids at his known hideouts. Authorities stated that the accused will be apprehended soon.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The seizure of beef in this case raises strong concerns about religious animosity towards Hindus as a potential motive behind the crime. In Hinduism, the cow is regarded as sacred and holds deep religious and cultural significance. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef), and desecrate Hindu temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is always a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor. However, in the absence of any concrete evidence that the crime was religiously motivated, this case is being categorised under the 'Undecided' database. If more details emerge that demonstrate religious animosity as a motivating factor behind the crime, then it will be added to the hate crime database. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that none of the media sources covering this case have specified the exact date on which the cow slaughter happened. Therefore, for documentation purposes, we have recorded the date based on when the incident was reported in the media.
