Hindu activists brutally attacked by Muslims for opposing cow smuggling in Karnataka
Case Summary
In Belgaum, Karnataka, a group of five Hindu activists were attacked by Muslims for opposing the illegal smuggling of cows. According to media reports, the Hindu victims were members of a Hindu organisation named Sri Ram Sena. A video of the incident went viral on social media, showing five Hindu men being tied to trees and beaten. On the day of the incident, the Muslim youths had been illegally transporting cows when Sri Ram Sena activists intervened and rescued the animals. The activists handed over those transporting the cows to the police, stating that the animals were being sent to a slaughterhouse. Angered by this intervention, the Muslim youths assaulted the Hindu activists of the Sri Ram Sena. The attackers did not stop, even as the Hindu victims pleaded for mercy. Some bystanders offered water to the Sri Ram Sena members, who were left breathless from the beating. The viral video footage was captured by some women standing on the balconies of nearby houses, using their mobile phones, and later uploaded to social media platforms. The police were subsequently notified, and the cows were sent to shelters. District Superintendent of Police Dr Bhimashankar Guled informed DH that the police took suo motu cognisance of the incident, registered a case, and began an investigation into this matter.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack not resulting in death. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. In this case, it is first important to understand that the cow holds profound spiritual and cultural significance within Hinduism. It is revered as a sacred symbol of life and motherhood. The cow is associated with various deities and is often regarded as a manifestation of the divine. Protecting cows is seen not merely as a religious duty but as an act of upholding dharma, or moral order. Numerous Hindu texts emphasise gau raksha (cow protection) as a critical virtue, and harm to cows is considered an offence against religious sensibilities. In this particular incident, the Hindu activists, members of Sri Ram Sena, were attacked by Muslims specifically because they protested the illegal transportation and slaughter of cows, an act they viewed as desecration of their faith. Their opposition was rooted in their religious beliefs and commitment to protecting what they hold sacred. Rather than a legal response, the Muslims resorted to subjecting the Hindus to brutal physical assault. The Hindu victims were brutally beaten for defending the dignity of the cow and for resisting practices they considered sacrilegious. This was not a random altercation; it was an act of targeting Hindu individuals for acting on their religious convictions of protecting cows. The violence was severe and public, as seen in the video showing the activists tied to trees and mercilessly beaten, further highlighting its targeted and intimidating nature. The disproportionate and brutal violence meted out to the Hindu activists in this case underscores its nature as a hate crime driven by religious animosity. The Muslim attackers did not merely resist interference; they responded with overwhelming physical aggression, continuing even as their Hindu victims pleaded for mercy. This degree of violence far exceeds what might occur in a simple dispute and reveals an intent to punish and deter Hindus from defending their beliefs and sacred symbols. Since this case meets the parameters of a religiously motivated crime, it is being added to the hate crime database.
