Case Summary

In Chhatia village, under the jurisdiction of Mufassil police station, in Purnia, a Hindu temple named Maharaja Sthan was attacked by a few unidentified miscreants. The accused desecrated the temple, the temple idols and Hindu religious flags. According to media reports, when the women of the village arrived at the temple for worship, they were shocked by the scene. The clay idols installed in the temple and the religious flags and other materials had been damaged by the perpetrators. Word of the desecration quickly spread, and hundreds of villagers gathered to protest against the incident. According to the villagers, this was not the first time the temple had been targeted. Reports confirmed that a previous incident of vandalism at the temple had taken place in 2023, also carried out by a few unidentified anti-social elements. On that occasion, the matter was settled following the intervention of the police. This time, villagers stated that the attack had been carried out by individuals from a particular community, who were also issuing threats that if a temple were constructed at the site, dire consequences would follow. The protesting villagers demanded that the administration identify and take strict legal action against the culprits as soon as possible, to ensure the security of religious places and maintain peace in the village. They also unanimously called for the construction of a boundary wall at the temple, under police supervision, to prevent such incidents in the future. Upon receiving information about the incident, officers from the Mufassil police station arrived at the site to manage the situation. Magistrate Rajesh Kumar, DCLR Preeti Kumari, Sadar in-charge DSP Kaushal Kishore Kamal, CO Sanjeev Kumar, BJP leader and Mukhiya Angad Mandal, and others assured the villagers that a thorough investigation was underway and the culprits would not be spared under any circumstances. Mufassil police station in-charge Sudin Ram noted that the angry villagers had been pacified and assured that strict action would be taken against whomever was found responsible. He also stated that information had been shared with senior officials, and further action would proceed as per their guidance.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbols. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The other subcategory selected is- Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. This case constitutes a clear example of a hate crime targeting Hindu places of worship. Hindu temples are deeply significant in the religious, cultural, and communal life of Hindus; they serve not only as places for worship and rituals, but also as centres for community gatherings, festivals, and the transmission of faith and traditions to future generations. Temples and the sacred idols, flags and other religious symbols they house are venerated by Hindu worshippers and form an essential part of Hindu religious identity. In this incident, perpetrators attacked a Hindu temple, causing immense hurt to the religious sentiments of the local Hindu community. The assailants desecrated clay idols and religious flags within the temple. The clay idols represent deities and are the focal point for devotion and ritual, while religious flags are symbols of sanctity and spiritual authority within the temple premises. The destruction of these sacred items not only inflicts material loss but also constitutes a grave assault on the faith and dignity of the community. The importance of these idols and flags cannot be overstated; their deliberate desecration is an act intended to disrespect, humiliate, and intimidate Hindus by attacking the core symbols of their belief. Such acts are not just mere vandalism; they are targeted actions aimed at undermining the religious identity of Hindus. Such actions targeting Hindu temples, their idols, and their other sacred religious symbols are a result of deep-rooted hostility towards Hinduism, its adherents, and their places of worship, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. Notably, this is not an isolated incident. A similar attack occurred at the very same temple in 2023, revealing a disturbing pattern of hostility towards Hindu places of worship in the area. This repetition suggests ongoing and intentional targeting of the community’s religious institutions, rooted in religious intolerance and hatred for the Hindu faith and its sacred shrines. Even though the perpetrators remain unknown, the nature of the offence, the intentional desecration of sacred Hindu symbols and repeated targeting of the temple, demonstrates that this is a hate crime specifically directed against Hindus. The pattern and manner of these attacks make clear that the intention was to cause fear, distress, and a sense of insecurity among Hindus by violating their revered places of worship and the symbols central to their faith. Since this case is an instance of a religiously motivated crime against Hindus and their place of worship, it is being added to the hate crime database. Disclaimer: Although the villagers in this case stated that members of a particular community were involved, there is no evidence to substantiate this claim, and the identity of the community remains unknown. Therefore, for the purpose of documentation, the perpetrators are categorised as 'Unknown'.
