Hindu woman ends up dead in a consensual relationship

Case Summary

In Karalikkonam village in Kollam district, a 21-year-old Hindu woman, Anjana Satheesh, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at the residence of her Muslim live-in partner, Mohammad Nihas. The Hindu girl had entered into an interfaith relationship with Mohammad Nihas, a bus conductor, about six months before her death. Due to opposition from Anjana's family, she left her home and moved in with Nihas. Her family later filed a missing person complaint at the Chadayamangalam police station, after which both families and the couple were called in for mediation by the police. Anjana had refused to return to her family, stating that she wished to stay with the Muslim man, and the couple was allowed to live together. However, their relationship had turned sour in the weeks leading up to her death, with recurring fights and growing tension. On the day of her death, Nihas claimed that he had left for work and returned to find Anjana hanging from a ceiling fan. What further complicated the issue was the absence of a suicide note, the deletion of data from her phone, and the presence of multiple bruises on her body. The police suspected foul play regarding the circumstances surrounding her death. The body had been sent to Parippally Medical College for post-mortem, and a case of unnatural death was registered at Chadayamangalam police station. As of the date of writing this report, the investigation was ongoing.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the Undecided database due to lack of conclusive evidence pointing to a religious motive. In this case, a Hindu woman was found hanging from a fan inside the house of her Muslim live-in partner Mohammad Nihas. There is strong possibility that the Hindu woman was murdered due to presence of bruise marks on her body, phone data wiped clean, and absence of suicide note. Even police had suspected foul play and there was it was reported that there were growing tensions in the relationship in weeks leading up to the girl's death. This case fits a broader pattern where Hindu women involved in interfaith relationships with Muslim men have ended up either missing or dead under mysterious circumstances. In several such cases, Hindu women are believed to have been religiously profiled and targeted by Muslim perpetrators for sexual exploitation, often driven by religiously motivated hostility towards Hindus and Hinduism. However, at this point it would be inappropriate to classify this as religiously motivated hate crime because of lack of evidence pointing to a religious motive or whether the Hindu woman was even murdered at all. Therefore, in the absence of clear and verifiable proof of religious animosity or intentional targeting based on faith, this case has been placed in the Undecided category. If further information emerges that indicates that this case was motivated by religious animosity, then it would be categorised under the hate crime database
